That's well and good for you, but I felt that something was going on at that moment and grabbing my 2 kids and Wife and "hunkering down" in a closet (all that takes time) wasn't what I wanted to do. I wanted the possible "threat" stopped NOW

Honestly, I learned from this that everyone will think that they know what they will do until it happens - and by "happens" I'm talking hair on the back of your neck, imminent danger "happen" - Heck, I might have typed in the same armchair quarterback response you did if this didn't actually happen, but last night my Flight or Fight pointed me in the direction that I needed to respond, not wait for something to "Happen to me", but YMMV

I've had several similar situations myself. and I too usually go out to stop it, my nearest neghibor is about a mile away, my house is at the end of about a 2 mile private road. We have had alot of stuff stolen out of our shop building and scrap piles. Now I dont go outside at just hearing noise to try and find what caused it, but I watch out the windows and if I see someone that doesnt belong I dang sure do go outside and confront them. I will normally grab a Glock and a AR. I have caught 2 seperate people stealing stuff and held them until the police come out. But since I held them there they couldnt be arrested for theft since they didnt take my stuff of my property

Was the light one of the deciding factors for you? Looks like the shotty was the only thing that had a light attached and for a bump in the night, a light is going to be more valuable than anything else. I voted AR for 30 opportunities at stopping the threat but I would say a WML would be a good idea on any HD gun.

EDIT: Just noticed the light on the Beretta so that would have been a good choice as well.

I'm dissapointed, my two top choices didn't make the list.
1. Flame thrower ( I admit it's hard on the carpet), it also solves the light issue.
2. For outdoor boogers, Bazooka

If I was going outside I would have grabbed the same thing you did and here's my logic.

I am outside so sound isnt as much of a concern. 12 GA buckshot, esp out of a barrel that short is going to spread really and be pretty devastating while losing energy quickly to prevent harm to neighbors. Also, by being conscious of how you hold the gun anyone who looked outside might not make the "guy outside in my neighborhood with a gun and in his underwear at 3 am" phone call. You could conceal it alongside your body. Another positive of the shotgun is that if you did indeed have to shoot. I would WANT neighbors to hear it and be calling the fuzz too, I want all the help I can get.

If I was inside the house I'd grab the 9mm. I'd want a light on any gun I planned to grab at 3AM. Having the ability to operate the gun one handed easily with the 9mm gives it the edge over the AR for me. I might put a TLR on the AR w/ pressure switch too.

Since you mention the spread of the Shotty, here is a target from ~10yards with defensive 3" load (I even shot this one handed to see what it felt like...felt like a .500 Smith long barrel revolver)

Surprisingly, with 2 hands and 2 3/4" Buckshot it isn't unmanageable...everyone that has shot it says it's easier to handle than expected...

There is a false sense of Security sometimes because the house is open on all 4 sides that it seems unlikely that it would be a target (easy to see by neighbors) and my neighborhood is gated with Manned Security 24/7 and only one gate in (Non-residents are admitted 1 by 1 and their information is written down), so I have never had this concern before of the "late night" intrusion.

I read your posts here so I know you're an intelligent guy and this is probably something you've realized since the day you moved in, but this is only a deterrent. While your risks are theoretically lower than many other homeowners, don't allow the gated entrance and a Ford Escape with a swirling orange light to let you become complacent.

I only have neighbors on one side of my house (besides across the street) and I've thought of two things:

1. I'm safer because one side of my property is open to the greenbelt and is easily seen by several houses a couple of hundred yards away as well as any traffic passing by.
2. I'm less safe because one side of my property is more accessible than the other sides.

I'm not sure which one is more applicable to my situation, perhaps a little bit of both?

To answer your question from your list of options, I'd go with the 870. Personally, since I don't have an 870, I'd still go with a 12 ga, but probably my Saiga. No matter how quickly I can chamber the next round in my Mossberg while shooting water jugs, I would prefer a guaranteed quick follow-up shot of a semi-auto.

If you'll notice the first sentence that I wrote that you quoted it says "There is a False sense of Security sometimes..." so I am not complacent with Ford Escapes and swirling orange lights.

If I was complacent I wouldn't have an array of defensive weapons to choose from to protect my Family.

I was referring to the security and gated entrance. Wasn't trying to insult your intelligence.
