Mine is a chunk gun with a Manton lock and a B.B. Loar barrel. It’s still good for 50-75 yards today.
My old Thompson was really reliable because I drilled out the nipple hole a few thousands of an inch.Traditional sidelock Thompson muzzleloaders are more reliable than any other sidelocks, IMHO. Their coil spring lock is far superior to the old "V" spring that sometimes results in cap not getting ignited.
I figure I would piggyback off this thread as well, as I am in the same boat as the OP. I would really like to get a modern fancy muzzleloader, but I kinda also want to get a traditions kentucky rifle or similar. What's the accuracy/reliability like on those bad boys? I keep hearing things about optics/traditional rifles required in places, but I'm assuming thats outside of oklahoma?
You never learned to paint your nipples? I can attest clear fingernail polish works in blizzard conditions and when the heavens open. Both days I killed a deer. When hunting in damp weather with a side lock percussion, I would wrap saran/ glad wrap over the cap to keep it dry. My usual load was 70 g pyrodex pistol powder, 44 cal 240g Hornady xtp hp in a 50 cal sabot .
Plastic wrap has never failed me. You can even wrap it around the break over / bolt actions and keep water out.You never learned to paint your nipples? I can attest clear fingernail polish works in blizzard conditions and when the heavens open. Both days I killed a deer.
