I know that the law is the law but I can't imagine prison for mistakenly parking with a handgun in your vehicle. Especially for a licensed holder. Big fine? Maybe. Prison?

Apparently, someone (maybe an employee-maybe a customer), saw him take his pistol out of the holster and put it in the glove compartment.

It was the post-master of that office who called the cops.

It's tragic as far as I'm concerned,,,
He will (has already) lost his life savings,,,
Now he's just trying to avoid a long prison sentence.

Like I said,,,
I park across the street.

I thought they passed legislation saying that they could no longer ban guns in vehicles/parking lots....

Empty holster, gun at home. Let them search your vehicle enough times until they give up. You can always tell them the empty holster's a silent protest against their policy of requiring children to remain unprotected.

Does anyone else see a potential business opportunity here? Racks of small coin-op lockers at convenience stores or something similar? Has it already been done?

I'm pretty sure...I work for a Municipality that used to prohibit guns in parking lots of city property. That got revised a couple of years ago and it was my understanding that it was due to a ruling/amendment...
Correct me if I am wrong, but didnt the bill get passed that now your vehicle is fine on ALL property?

You are correct in that a bill (HR 2614) was recently passed and signed into law in Oklahoma,,,
But that doesn't override Federal law which covers Post Office parking lots.

This bad law was a result of a few nuts "going postal" back in the late 70's early 80's.

Anyways, the postmaster is the one who pushed it hard,,,
Apparently he's a true anti-gun person.

Shame.

VA hospitals around the country have secured felony convictions for several vets mistakenly parking in a VA hospital lot with a handgun in the vehicle. Going into the VA lot gives them implied consent to search. I have been asked if I have a gun based on VA wanting all my ID cards out of my wallet, which leaves my OK carry license showing. I simply reply "No gun."
So far, no search of mine, and there is nothing in there to find anyway. But I would not risk going into the lot if there were a gun in the car.

But I would not risk going into the lot if there were a gun in the car.

Because there are always some petty bureaucrats out there,,,
Just chomping at the bit to exercise his authority on someone else.

A reasonable person would simply say,,,
Didn't you know this is illegal,,,
Please move your car.

But there is always that @$$-hole who wants to prove his authority,,,
Tons of people have become "accidental felons" because of this.

Why take the chance is my motto.

but my 47 second trip into the Post Office box area is not something I am concerned about.

You do know that it's just as illegal for you to have it in your car in the post office parking lot as it would be if you carried it inside.

I am afraid of someone seeing me take it out of my holster and reporting me,,,
Actually I'm more afraid of that than if I were to carry it inside.

You may laugh at that concern but it happened in my small town of Ripley, OK,,,
Some old biddy saw a woman take hers out of her purse and put it in the glove box,,,
The old biddy told the postmaster and he called the county sheriff the next time the lady pulled in.

I park across the street now,,,
I lock it in a box cabled to my car seat frame.

Call me paranoid,,,
But I don't think I would enjoy a federal prison.
