Into the why-does-this-happen box I'd like to add the decline of rural culture, and increase in urban culture.
More kids used to be exposed to the circle of life and death as seen in nature, now it seems the urban snowflakes just whine at the slightest thing, not having any grasp of the existence of violence in life.

Parents are afraid to tell them the truth; that there are people that will, for no reason you will ever understand, try to hurt or kill you and people you care about.
Be prepared.

I understand that an assistant football coach died advancing into the madman's rifle fire in an effort to shield several female students.

Who is responsible for supressing his right to have been armed? They have blood on their hands.

He was apart of their security team as well......

Since the FBI didn't act on the tip on Cruz back in Sept., since the US Air Force & NICS didn't keep the gun out of the hands of the TX shooter Devin Kelly, since gun free zones don't work, since all the other anti-gun legislation that is FUBAR/SNAFU, etc., lets infringe on and take away all the 2nd Amendment Rights of law abiding citizens. :pissed: :censored:

Just Heard on the news that in addition to the YouTube tip back in Sept, they received a tip on their hotline in January that this same individual was acting crazy, had guns, and was threatening to shoot up his school. The FBI apparently dropped the ball and never got the information to the local FBI office to investigate.

If I remember correctly, the Fed government (Air Force?) dropped the ball regarding the Church shooter in Texas a few months ago.

A reasonable person just cannot trust that the government and LEO community is there to protect them at all times. Until we have a solution for identifying the nut cases that could commit mass murder, we need to eliminate the gun free zones and let responsible citizens assist in protecting themselves.

I'm as big a proponent of the 2A as anyone you'll ever meet, but there were enough indications, signs and evidence to have prevented this. Tips to the FBI as late as in January of this year specifically telling them there was a risk of him shooting up a school . 36 trips to the kids house by the police in response to 911 calls. etc, etc, etc.

He shouldn't have been legally able to own a firearm. I don't know what laws need to be changed in order for that to be the case, but it needs to be the case. If we can't figure out a way to keep dip$hits like this from being armed, we are all going to pay the price by losing our right to exercise our God given rights.

The utter ineffectiveness of the federal government to follow through on their claims and promises is exactly why they should never be given more authority than they already have. They practically never prosecute prohibited persons for lying on 4473's, rarely prosecute felons in possession of guns, can't process information critical to national security in a timely manner (i.e., the Saudi national in Weatherford), and can't even be bothered to report disqualifying crimes to their own NICS system (DoD).

So why the hell should Americans be further restricted because of their failures?

Geraldo, Elder Battle Over Gun Control: 'What Do You Do With an AR-15, Hunt Ducks?'

I watched it and Geraldo made a complete fool of himself. He was saying that the shooter used a “machine gun”. What an idiot. Why don’t people ever set the records straight on stupid statements like that and say it is not a machine gun? But Larry did lay it out pretty darn good. Geraldo sounded just like the MSM liberals. I think fox needs to fire him so CNN or NBC can welcome him with open arms. Another thing. How many of these shootings are gonna happen before our dumb rear government will realize that “gun free zones” are bs and don’t work. Why isn’t the republicans or Trump for that matter bringing this up. Where is the NRA or GOA? If that idiotic law wasn’t in place who knows how many lives could have been saved in all these shootings. If a teacher is licensed to carry a gun they should be able to at school. Or if the state has constitutional carry a teacher can carry at school. Just like I should be able to wear mine into the school. It is not that hard to make our schools more safe. The same old “no one needs an AR15” crap needs to be put to death. That isn’t getting us anywhere and it sure as heck ain’t gonna keep our kids safe. I pray to God everyday that this never happens to my son or any of my family. I can’t even imagine the grief.

It's like this, when I was a school age kid, from from 1956-1969 every pickup truck had a gun rack with at least one sometimes 2 rifles in it. These trucks were parked in the school parking lots and driven by school age boys, girls and some teachers. I do not recall a single school shooting during that time.

Again, We do NOT have a gun problem, we have a liberal a$$ed Democrat problem. The liberals have waged war on our culture, our Christian beliefs, forced prayer out of our school systems, promoted abortion (did you know our largest export to the world is abortion?) and the liberals support homosexuality, encourage welfare families, illegal immigration and support the dismantling of the United States Constitution.

We do NOT have a gun problem we have a lawlessness problem that stems from the DNC.
I have the solution, we just can't say it here.

These people committing these crimes can't be all that 'mentally ill'. They are sharp enough to choose gun-free zones, choose victims who will draw the maximum emotion out of the victim's loved ones and society in general, and often include an escape plan if they don't choose to kill themselves. Are they emotionally disturbed and/or lacking a conscience? Yup. But, would they choose a venue where their plans would fail or have minimal success at best? No. Someone shooting back would certainly foil their plans.

Bottom line? These events can almost never be prevented, but they can certainly be halted when intended victims can shoot back.

Woody

You simply don't understand what mental illness is.

The little post next to the big house
You ever think that maybe there is a profound and fundamental change in our country, our people, the way our children are raised, our society and the general makeup of the American psyche that might be a contributing factor, as well? Blame the meds all you like, blame "made up" diagnoses you don't understand, whatever you like. I still say it's the chicken and the egg - and from someone on the front lines of the fight against mental illness, I think you've got it all wrong, personally.

Blame sociological issues you don't understand all you like. You don't know what you're talking about, and I think you're wrong.

See, that doesn't really get us anywhere.

I don't think it's a chicken-egg or either-or problem. I think you could describe a very complex set of societal changes. But 100% of us experience that and not 100% of us go commit mass shooting (see the flaw in your earlier logic?).

I think societal changes play a role, but that overprescription of meds is one problematic result of a whole host of interrelated societal changes; and that side effects in some individuals as a primary contributor in mass school shootings warrants investigation.
