So I'm not stating my opinion is fact. All I have said is that there appears to be a correlation that could stand a little scrutiny.

I disagree wholeheartedly that the only options are to accept things as they are, or throw them out entirely (or do nothing).

I suspect there is a linkage between the cultural problem and the mental health problem, and that it's very complex.

A reasonable post deserves a reasonable response. I wasn't saying we should accept the status quo or throw it all out (or do nothing), I'm just stating that the medical education and employment system is designed to discourage specialization in mental health. You'll never get the quantity or quality of professionals necessary to shift the burden away from ER's and GP's. Institutionalization for defectives like Cruz has been virtually obliterated by both the hand wringing liberals and the health insurance industry. Many insurance policies offer crumbs for mental health treatment versus something like cancer or heart disease. There's still the stigma of mental health to contend with too. Having cancer or heart disease won't make you a virtual leper the way a serious mental health diagnosis does.

So we can and should expect more from the collective "system" such as it is, but don't expect too much too soon, or you'll be sorely disappointed.

What is more scary than the event itself is the reaction the masses have. Totally mindless drivel from liberal/progressive culture.
Makes me sick.
I feel hopeless, sad, offended. My feelers hurt! Who can I blame for this? What new law can I demand? Something has to change!

I'm as big a proponent of the 2A as anyone you'll ever meet, but there were enough indications, signs and evidence to have prevented this. Tips to the FBI as late as in January of this year specifically telling them there was a risk of him shooting up a school . 36 trips to the kids house by the police in response to 911 calls. etc, etc, etc.

He shouldn't have been legally able to own a firearm. I don't know what laws need to be changed in order for that to be the case, but it needs to be the case. If we can't figure out a way to keep dip$hits like this from being armed, we are all going to pay the price by losing our right to exercise our God given rights.
I understand your feelings about this. But, no matter how many laws are passed criminals aren’t gonna follow them. Whether this idiot bought a gun from a shop or not is irrelevant. He could have gotten one if he wanted one. Or he could have made a bomb and blew the school up. Killers are gonna kill. We shouldn’t have NICS or any of the other major restrictions we have. Because not one criminal has ever followed those laws. And they never will. Shall not be infringed. That’s thrown around a lot and I am one that does it. But that is what it means. It doesn’t say shall not be infringed unless we don’t like something. The founders made it that way for a reason. I’m not trying to direct this post towards you. I just wanted to comment on what you said about the laws. I hope you don’t take it the wrong way.

The seesaw will go up and down on this for many years before one side or the other sees any form of permanent satisfaction. The threat to students across the Country increased exponentially based on copycat type scenarios and we want to blame the head of the FBI and POTUS for these attacks. How bout that segment of society that wants me to believe that an AR15 is going to enable more killings than a truck at an event in Paris, or a knife on a bridge in London, or a bomb strapped to a sycophant in iraq blowing up school children actually accept responsibility for raising their children? Instill some core values from birth that teach right from wrong and not a sense of entitlement, maybe even to accept the hand you are given and work your arse off to better yourself over the course of your life. Many a Private reached Sergeant Major or General Officer by busting their butt to improve their situation. Many a CEO was made from a mailroom clerk, why is this so hard to grasp?

My advice to my kids, all 6 of them.
1. You will surpass my achievements in life, it is only natural.
2. The people around you owe you nothing, you must create a niche for your craft.
3. The family you build is your only source of permanent support, build it well and with the right spouse.
4. Credit is for your home, try to pay cash for everything else. We do not need to drive expensive cars or wear high end clothes.
5. Life is not fair, you must prepare for bad things to happen to good people.
6. Your word is all you have at times, make it count.
6. God created man in his image, not the other way around.
The list goes on, but you get the drift. In other words, you are owed nothing and have the ability to be anything your drive and motivation allows you to pursue. NEVER expect a handout, it always has a cost.
