Hell, my shop can't even get their managers to come in on time. Get calls from managers in other departments asking me to cover while they get their **** together.

If i was in the office already, i wouldnt think it that big a deal, but most of the time i'm in my PJ's working from home. Now i got to haul @ss to work to cover for the "managers".

Lead by example. Its hard to penalize staff, when managers have created a culture of sub standard.

Meh, I find it's the managers to blame. When an office is micromanaged to death and literally every minute counts, the incentive is no longer there. If you show up and clock in 3 minutes early, you will get an email the next day telling you to leave 3 minutes early. Now, I'm 3 minutes early, run into my lunchtime 15 minutes and stay after my scheduled time for another 10 minutes. Now I have to leave half an hour early the next day, or come in half an hour late to crush that time. I find it's better to just work "almost 40ish" every week.

This really depends on the type of job you have....I rarely show up at 8:00 sharp...it may be 8:15 or even 8:30 before I get in most mornings. I don't punch a clock and my philosophy for myself and my employees is that you work the hours required to complete the tasks assigned to you. All of my employees have cell phones and can get email remotely. If a call comes in at 8:00am and you are not there, you can bet it gets transferred to your cell and you are on the hook for it.

Many times I have worked well into the evening resolving issues or completing projects for customers that require "after-hours" work. I don't get paid 1 penny extra for staying late...if you expect to me to work at 10pm solving for a client, don't bust my chops for walking in at 8:30 the next morning. I'd be more than happy to punch a clock at 8:00 and punch out at 5:00 or get paid extra for OT...but that is not the job that I have.

We do have employees who have fixed schedules (7-4, 8-5, etc...) and they are always the ones who complain about other people showing up late...of course they are the ones that leave the second their shift is over and they never complain about the after hours work since they are never involved in it...I tell them to worry about themselves and do the best job in THEIR role and not to worry about what someone in a different role is doing...

Im either allways early, allways late or exactly on time. I either work or dont do anything. I get the same pay, same benefits, and as much time off as i want.

I suck up to the boss and usually can BS my way out of trouble. Some times i drink on the job and send the boss on a beer run. Hell, Im in bed with the boss most nights.

Did I mention, Im retired?

My oil change guy hired a new mechanic/oil changer a while back. Nice seeming, knowledgable, fast, thorough, 'bout everything you'd want in that job.

Come my next visit to the shop, he's no longer employed. "What happened?" "Wanted to work two or three days a week, would just not show up, and didn't believe it when he was told he's expected to be here every day."

I see this and similar behavior all over the place. Some of it is drugs, some is alcohol, some is just no real personal values when it comes to work, and a lot is what some friends of mine used to call "The Thing That Wouldn't Leave." 25 year old son who they couldn't get to move out. He would work just enough to meet his moderate personal needs. He had no expensive habits. Happy ending was that he met a woman, fell in love, and listened when she said he had to get it together. He is doing well, and griping about unreliable employees.

I spent the last 18 years working from 5 - 6.... 13 hr days typically. I always felt the same way, made no sense, not like I ever changed the schedule....
