I've had guys late for our 9:30 shift on drill weekends. I really don't understand it. I've only been truly late to work a few times, and those times I called and told my boss I was running a few minutes late due to traffic or just not getting out of the house when I needed to. A simple phone call goes a long way.

That is because the original title of the thread was "What happened to work ethic?" or something along that line. I was just making a statement that there are too many people out there that lack work ethic in general today.

Easy killa, im right there with you. Just pointing out an anomaly.

Our employees at 2 seperate locations are sort of minor business partners so they pretty much come and go as they please. Its also kind of the nature of our business. Without them we would exist but it wouldnt be at the same level of business we are presently at so we put up with more than most businesses would. I just figure it best that we be the cool type of management.

We run 2 tattoo shops in 2 different states and we're trying to run the same basic setup in both shops as we are working to develop a business model for future expansion shops. We dont open until noon and then we only stay open until we all decide to close- no business we close, busy we stay open until we finish, usually though we are always booked solid. We try to run a pretty laid back atmosphere in both shops. Our artists are not paid hourly or contract labor like our support staff, we hire only professional artists. Artists can be quirky, mischievous, and just plain weird in some cases. Most are either just passing thru or are maybe tired of trying to be an owner and an artist and are looking for a space to operate in someone elses squeeky clean well supplied and licensed shop. We split their business even but then we supply them with pretty much everything to go to work with: well maintained basic equipment, basic supplies, and access to a receptionist/booking/shop manager. They only have to supply their personal tools and their own hygiene/cleaning supplies.

Still, the older artists arent always the best to work with, even though theyre the most prosperous for us. The younger artists are healthier and can work longer hours with more energy plus theyre hungry and eager and they really want to make more money so they work faster and show up to work most of the time, but their talent is limited and they can only do certains types of work. The older and more experienced artists act like divas sometimes- they come and go as they want, theyre slow, kind of cantankerous, their arms get sore faster or their backs go out, etc, etc, blah blah, basically its because they know theyre good at what they do and we need them.

At my office, I come and go as I please. I have a high work ethic so the job gets done regardless of hours in office.

To me it seems there will always be those with strong work ethics and those without.

If you have a strong work ethic, but your peers and managers do not, you probably won't be recognized for your prowess. Find employment that will respect your efforts. If you're a manager, make your expectations clear and unbiased.

If you don't have a strong work ethic, best find those like you.

I feel the same way. My shift starts at 7am and there are always people coming in late. We get wrote up if we come in late and some of those people are all the way up to step 6. On step 7 they get fired. I just don't see how someone can be tardy almost every week. I have never been late to my job and I have been there over 2 years. I understand that sometimes things happen and people have to be late but having a habit of it is inexcusable. This new generation of young people don't give a crap. They weren't raised the way that I and a lot of you guys were. They are more interested in texting and playing on their phones. It sickens me. Technology is what gets to me the most. I am glad that we have the things that we have but at the same time it has ruined this country. Everyone is addicted to phones and the internet. LOL, look at us!! But seriously, kids and young adults these days don't have a clue.
