He might have been having his leg chomped on and firing point blank without arms extended leading to limp wristing it.

Being that it was a bear attack, I'm sure he limp wristed it due to A) a bad/impropper grip and B) a turd in his pants.

I agree, but would start with the 29! and maybe get a model 69 as a back up! just point and squeeze not issue with limp wrist

That is why revolvers are considered backpack/bear country weapons. The only issue with that in this scenario is that according to the story this guy shot 10 times. That wouldn't have happened with a revolver though a 357 or 44 would have had a bit more punch.
