Allopurinol is a prescription drug. Like I said earlier. Been around for over 1/2 a century. With insurance I pay $6/month. Asked the price without insurance once - $18 for a months worth.
Gout is almost as bad as kidney stones.
Peanuts can cause flare ups in some people.
No choclate (didn't happen), no bacon (hope it doesn't happen), no freaking twinkies and now I get to tell people peanuts are bad for gout. I feel like the harbinger of doom.
I'm on allopurinol and one of my heals still gives me crap at the start of the day and if zi've been on my feet a long time.
Question for the gout sufferers. My little brother started passing kidney stones on a regular basis...his doc told him it was because of his uric acid buildup.
Have any of you guys had kidney stones because of uric acid?
Gout is incredibly painful, and it's chronic, so get used to it. It'll flare up in the lowest joint in your body. Some people get it in the great toe. I get it in the ankles and knees sometimes, but I haven't had a good flare-up in 5+ years. Allopurinol and diet adjustments are the trick.
Figure out your trigger foods, and avoid them, at least until you've got a therapeutic level of allopurinol in your blood. For me, it's KFC gravy, most kinds of bacon and pork products, although I can eat ham in moderation. Wine will also trigger it.
Keep hydrated, too. That'll be a big help.
Now the bad news: your kidneys are compromised. Add kidney stones to the list of potential issues. If you get one, you tend to end up with the other.
BTW, if you had your first gout attack in the military, it's good for about a 20% disability, I found out.
well... i think ive taken my limit of nsaids for the day. I downed about a gallon of water. I cant stand on my foot, so im stuck here on the couch unless I feel like crawling.
Damn, sorry to hear it. No gout, but I've got that damned stones. I've not had one now in about 4 years. I was averaging one about every 10 months. Go figure...
