It is finally time for me to jump into the scary black gun market and get me an AR. I can tell you anything you want to know about shotguns, ARs not so much.

Any thoughts on the Ruger? I do not want a scope, maybe a red dot at some point but iron sites work for me.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

So many good choices. Like Harry asked, give a budget amount to narrow down the search.

I have a BCM that I like. It’s accurate and fun to shoot. I have a MeproLite RD on it. My son bought from a friend one of S&W’s higher end ARs NIB for $500 that is really nice. Some good deals can be found.

$400 or $2000? 16" or 20"? Fixed stock or collapsible? Standard handguard or a rail of some sort? Light or heavy barrel?

To break in on the lower end I'd go with a Smith & Wesson Sport, or look at the one of the Radical Firearms guns. I've shot the Smith before and it was pretty good. My son has a Radical and he's been please with it. I'm not sure what the street price is but while it's a nice gun the MSRP of the Ruger kind of pushes me away for a starter gun. PSA has some good stuff too, a lot of variety and inexpensive.

Good questions. Here are my answers and other thoughts:

Budget? - Not set, probably around $1000 max. I doubt the wifey will let me go over that amount.

Amount of shooting? - After it is tuned, likely 50 rounds a month.

Caliber? - I don't care, as long as ammo is somewhat easy to find for it.

Stock? - Don't care, likely fixed.

Standard handguard or a rail of some sort? -I do not know what this means. However, I do not need anything fancy. I am not a baroque person and do not need a lot of bells and whistles.

Light or heavy barrel? - No preference.

Intended purpose? - These stupid things keep showing up and have over the last few months. More and more babies keep getting born and my Mossberg 940 isn't solving my concerns. Only other option I have is bolt rifles and a Henry 9mm ranch gun:

Edit: These are about 10 yards from a blind so I do not need something that shoots 400 yards. Maximum shooting range is likely 80-100 yards. I just need a high volume and fast shooting rifle.

Unless someone on here can say they have successfully hunted hogs with 5.56, I would go for something heavier. You could start by looking at this one and see what other models PSA has in 7.62 if that doesn't tickle your fancy. You could put whatever iron sights you want on it and plenty of room for a red dot down the line.

For piggies, i would recommend something scarier and blacker than a 5.56 AR

I realize they are nuisance animals but for me the thought of wounding an animal and having them perish in a slow, miserable manner is unsettling

Even better - 45/70 lever gun ! Some models also come in black and are quite scary
