I can understand OHP using their cars but what about city cops driving 50+ miles for an off duty gig in their PD cars and wearing their PD uniforms. Kinda getting away from the OPs question but I see it at the Casino's during concerts and other events all the time

Which city? If their chief allows it, there is nothing wrong with it. I'm curious which city allows their officer's to drive that far for off duty employment. Now, officer's in general have continuing education classes all over the state. OU Police Dept. along with OSU PD host classes taught by the state of Oklahoma. What you see may be a misunderstanding.....I have driven from Sapulpa to NSU in Tahlequah for state classes that I have to take to keep my certification.

Ive seen Perry PD officers doing security for concerts and other events at Native Lights north of Newkirk. I have also seen OKC PD at Firelake during the MMA Fights they host there

I guess I don't have an answer.....EVERY Police Dept. is different.....The only thing I can think of, for OKC anyways, is maybe the promoter uses OKC PD in OKC venues and instead of going through the hassle of finding people, they just stick to OKC PD.....especially when it comes to tax time and dishing out 1099's.....I don't know, I'm thinking outside the box....

I travel out of state quite a bit for training. Im going to galveston at the end of january for a week of training. A One holds their training at the Cherokee Casino and one might see a lot of vehicles there too.

When I worked for the Sheriffs Office I was allowed to take my county unmarked vehicle just about anywhere. Of course I was on call too.

I am also technically On Call still, but not allowed to drive the vehicle for personal use. (goto the store, goto part time employment)

I also think there needs to be some common sense used as well...Not loading up the family and running to wal mart, or going to tulsa for a movie. On that same note though, if I wanna run to wal mart or around my county and I am willing to assist when needed then i think it should be ok. I guess that could be a whole other thread.

From what I understand the Highway patrol provides troopers for all football games for both OU and OSU. I think as security for the coaches. I know nothing more about this because i am not a football fan.

However, I am a state employee and I am curious as to if the schools pay for these trooper's time and gas and for the use of their state car to do this? Not to mention the over time if any, the hotels, the per deim. In a time of drastic budget cuts, is this necessary? If the school does pay for it, then all is good.

Im sure the troopers dont mind going to the games and all. But Im just curious. If there are any troopers out there, how do they determine who get to goto the games? Or is it a special detail... Someone enlighten me please.

Actually, football fan or not, they are NOT all that excited to be there. It is not their job to watch the game, it is their job to provide security in what can only be considered a disaster waiting to happen.

I will admit, there are perks to being a Trooper, though not as many as one would think. Working security at a football game is NOT one of them.

I can understand City policies and each cities decision, but im talking about State Departments.... OHP, DAs Offices, DHS, OBN, ABLE...Each one of these agencies have different policies but are under the same employer...

Not getting my feelings hurt either way, was just curious if the colleges paid OHP...lol

My biggest question is could the city they work for be held liable for something the officer does during an off duty job since they are wearing the PDs uniform and "representing" the city they work for even though the are off duty?

I don't know how it is now. OHP does not allow second jobs in uniform. In fact, troopers have to get permission from their commanding officer to work a second job.

I can tell you that quite a few years ago OKCPD officers were REQUIRED to work any off-duty jobs in uniform by the Department. We had several off-duty officers providing security at the hotel I worked at. They were always in uniform. One of those officers was shot and killed while working for us. The family had a hard time getting the city to pay off on their worker's compensation claim. I believe the city also balked at paying benefits for a death in the line of duty. I wish I could tell you how those claims were resolved but I was in my last trimester at the time. While I was on maternity leave, the owner of the hotel sold it and I was laid off while I was on maternity leave so I don't know whatever became of the case.
