I could be wrong about the age. When I was 21 that was the requirement. I agree about 18 year olds being eligible to drink beer at 18. They should be alowed. For that matter, any 18 year old that is in the armed service should be able to carry as well. It's the other 18 year olds that sit around and play video games that have no training in firearms that have me concerned.

You're correct....18 for long guns.....21 for handguns.

Honestly open carry I don't have a problem with it. Its an option and I would like to have even if I can not imagine me using open carry. I do think that open carry or any carry with out training is a poor idea. It creates a problem for the untrained shooter that could make a poor choice due to lack of knowledge. I'm sure I will catch some heat on this, but knowledge is power and just allowing someone to strap on a gun and walk into public with out an understanding of the laws could quickly land them in court as well as a host of other issues.

So training should be a requirement to exercise a right to use the tools available to you for self defense?

Yes. That is why the fed & state government should offer free training to all in firearms, since the right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental individual right.
If the folks in power were really concerned about public safety, you would think we would all have firearms training in our schools, just like we have drivers ed (and driving is not even a right). Instead, they are trying to limit access to firearms, which essentially means whittling away at the right.

Training should not be a requirement to exercise one's right to keep and bear arms, any more than training in writing/reading or public speaking needs to be a requirement before one gets 1st amendment rights.

If you are going to carry in the public around other citizens? Yes. When you go into the public with a weapon, you have a moral obligation to at least know how to operate the weapon properly and safely. The firearms training classes set up for CCW do not require you to shoot proficient. Ie.. Meet a minimum score requirement. They are set up so that a student only has to show knowledge of the firearm and how to safely operate it, unload, reload, etc. Anyone who thinks that is a bad idea needs to go to a class and see just how gun-dumb some of these people are. A little training can't hurt them.

Remember, the point of the training is safety. This doesn't infringe on a persons ability to carry. In this case, the key word to focus on isn't "right" or "privilege"' it is responsibility.

Have you received training for that pocket knife you (most likely) carry?
