What would you do without them? We don't have skunks in Alaska. When you smell the pungent aroma of skunk and the overpowering stinch of the pig lots in Guymon I know I'm finally getting close to home.

Bah. I'd rather be back in AK. I miss dodging the moose and watching the MPs chasing them around on post.

Apparently skunks make decent pets. There are ways to remove the scent glands, and some people do so. The biggest downside is that there is no approved rabies vaccine for them. If your skunk bites someone, you will be required to put it down so they can take a brain sample to test for rabies. I guess in this case it was more of a wild skunk that you had befriended, but I thought it was interesting to note. I don't like skunks, but a friendly hot dog eating one is okay in my book. Sorry to hear about its passing.

...and yes, I do know too much about these things. I went through an exotic pet phase when I was a freshman in high school. Fortunately my parents were smart enough not to indulge me. For all I know, however, this information might not be current. Disclaimer: always research skunks before buying one.

Yep it's a violation of federal law to vaccinate a skunk, racoon, boccat, ferret, etc. against rabies. If you know a veteranarian that will do it for you keep it very quiet.

Known a few people who have had descented skunks as pets and they said they were great pets very intelligent playful and friendly.

That is a classic example of a photo bombing, I bet he did it on purpose

My Grandma and Grandpa caught a baby skunk back in the 60's and had it de-scented, and it was my mom's pet. They loved it, said it was one of the best pets they ever had; smart, funny, and fun to throw at people that hadn't ever been to the house before!

I have a pet skunk, I got her when I lived in Georgia, it is illegal there to own black & white ones so there are breeders that breed them in different colors, ours is called a chocolate chip... She is almost 9 years old and is the coolest useless pet I've ever had...

Can you potty train them and are they good indoors with dogs?

Ours will use a cat box.... most of the time, they have very strong personalities & they hold a grudge. If you piss them off they don't forget. We don't let ours outside because like someone said earlier, there is not a rabies vaccine for them, she is good with our dogs, but she was here first, she kinda runs things with the dogs & she is by far the smallest animal I have.
