I wait till after first freeze before I start shooting rabbits.
When I was around thirteen and staying on my uncles hog and tobacco farm in Kentucky (he was a sharecropper) he told me not to shoot rabbits till after a freeze or two because they had "wolves" in their backs....found out later on that the "wolves" he was referring to were grubs / worms that were under their skin.

Yup. That's what Grandma called them. She had seen too many of those. She'd clean a catfish, eat squirrel brains, doctor cows - but she refused to clean or cook rabbits.
