When they manufacture a threaded tap, do they cut the threads first then the flutes or do they cut the flutes first then the threads?
It seams to me if they chuck the bar stock in the lathe, cut it to the largest outside diameter, thread it then cut the flutes then the taper, it makes it simpler in my mind.
Why couldn't you cut the outside diameter, flute the tap, then thread it?
