The BCM Mod 4 latch is slightly larger than a standard GI latch and has a slick finish. It's stronger by design and at $45-$50 it's not a cost prohibitive upgrade. I don't see a reason not to buy one.

I measured it at one time but I don't have them anymore. I know the wrench flats on the blackouts work with my rail and barrel length. I know its .750 at the gas block, and its a little smaller infront of the gas block to the shoulder. Just make it whatever diameter and about the same thickness or a little thicker than the wrench flats on a blackout.

I have a barrel stub I cut off a colt I bet matches. Probably make it .200" thick. Will still have plenty of threads. You only need like 6 threads for full strength. 28 tpi at .400 long you still have 11 threads engaged. gives you plenty of room for the relief in the mount and shims. Assuming the relief groove in the mount is .075 (it's shorter than that) and we use enough shims to turn it 360* (we won't) you'll still get at least 8 threads engaged which is plenty.
