Remember John ***** Sporting Goods in Enid? My Mom went with me to buy a .22 revo (H&R) when I was ... way young. No such thing as background checks back then, but I don't think he would have sold it to me without knowing that my parents approved.

ETA:  The forum doesn't like the legit last name of the store's owner! Those of you old timers who are familiar with Enid will remember it!!! It was 'Dike's' ... rhymed with bikes if the forum doesn't like that word!

I wouldn't sell a gun to a kid or an adult that looks like a kid. It's my decision who I sell to and I was on my own at 17 and had to grow up quick but I wasn't near mature at 18 or 19, even 20. I'd rather sell to someone in their 30's. That's me.
I'm not in the business of selling guns or being the poster child for 2a. I am a guy with a conscious and I'm not selling to someone that's nuts or drunk either. Even if I know them. I have that choice.
I'm just a guy that might have a gun for sell and I've never had a problem in selling the few I've sold. So no. I would never sell to an 18 year old. Not even close.
I got my first gun when I was 10 that was bought new for me. 22 bolt action that I bought from a shoe store. No lie. My mom was there but I picked it out and it was handed to me with a box of free LR ammo that I walked out of the store, on main street, with it under my arm.

18 is legal in a private sale but it’s totally up to the seller’s discretion.

This is true

The OP was entirely in his right to refuse sale.

The buyer was attempting a legal purchase.

I don't believe he should be banned, but I support the OP in his right of refusal, for whatever reason.

I HAVE made sales to under 21 buyers, that I knew. I have also, refused a sale to those I felt uncomfortable with.

I may not know where that red flag came from or why, but I learned to pay attention when it waves.
