Walmart doesn't care if you hate them or not. We collectively sound like a mouse crawling up an elephant's rump with molestation on his mind . . .

nofearfactor, you may want to copy my bumpersticker idea. It's "Honk if you've been married to me!" CB

I'm with you.

The guy started with a small shop or two. Everybody loves to support the Mom & Pop shops, just like what he had, but then when they succeed, the love and support turns into hatred. Are they supposed to stop halfway up the ladder or what?

Hell no! People love to hate on big business just because they are jealous. He made the American dream come true for him. He didn't just sit by and talk smack about "some company" being successful, he went out and made it happen. Granted, I don't know about all their politics and behind the scenes stuff, but hey, the man made his dream come true and more power to him for that.

What gets me is they have 20 checkout lanes and only 3 are open?? WTH.

What gets me is most Wal-Marts are hiring... but people still complain they can't find a job after refusing to apply...

Also, the 20 checkout lanes serve two main purposes: Black Friday and simplifying Accounting's job. It's much simpler and less time consuming to audit registers between cashier shifts when a till comes up with a discrepancy.

Of course, with the hiring practice that they started when I was a Department Manager (and might still use), I can see why people end up going elsewhere. They took local management out of the process except to ask specific questions on a questionairre. When I left, you had two local interviews: DM/CSM and Assistant Manager. After a background check was completed, you got called for your first interview, typically 1-2 weeks after applying. After that first interview, Home Office HR came back and said yes or no to calling you for a second interview about 2 weeks later. On that second one, you also got the form for the piss test. And then it was another 2-3 weeks before you were approved.

Their reason for that was local management not following policy on starting pay. You were supposed to get X amount more per hour based on your experience in retail. Most local management wouldn't consider it, while a few did, so Corporate decided to take it into their own hands.

But yeah, it took around 6 weeks from the time that I saw an application for an open position until I could actually hire them. That doesn't work when people are actually looking for a job. It was also made more difficult in Weatherford because Wal-Mart uses broad Department of Labor statistics to determine the base hourly wage. Because Weatherford is rural, it's minimum wage. That makes it difficult to compete for new hires when McDonald's is starting people at $9/hr, especially when Wal-Mart is only going to be a part-time job unless you work overnight. The local stores still had discretion on overnight differential pay when I left, and it was all over the place from store to store.

For the record, I don't actually hate Walmart. The comment I made was a continuation of the "joke" that I tried to turn my misunderstanding in. I tried to make my case of mistaken identity (of the DOC inmate) into an elaborate plan to unite all of us OSAers.

But still, in the case of the Walmart employee (if that's the case) wearing a DOC inmate costume, that's about the stupidest idea I can think of. For one, not all employees were wearing costumes, so it's not like I could just give him the benefit of the doubt. Second, I know for a fact that it made my girlfriend very uncomfortable. It's not like we were planning on buying baloney or cheese anyway, but if that'd been the case I think she would have skipped out on it for fear of going near the stigmatized "inmate." Pirate costumes and nurse outfits are cool, but that costume may have been a little too far. Shame on the manager who let it slide. Or, if the other side is true, shame on Walmart for getting subsidized labor.

But yes, Walmart has contributed greatly to my upbringing. They probably pumped just as much money into my education as local property taxes did. And we've weathered this recession better than 99% of the country just because Walmart doesn't stop. Still, you can ask just about anyone around here, and they'll tell you that it ain't as good as when Sam was alive. A lot of that was moving the vendors in closer to Rogers and Bentonville. It sounds trivial, but there are certain parts of life in the Ozarks that aren't improved by rich people moving in. Sure, we got a Ruth's Chris and a brand new Embassy Suites, but they sit right on top of an old friend's farm, and some primo hunting grounds. Don't kid me, I see the importance of the former, but everything is two sided. Some of you might enjoy doing a quick Google search of "Cross Church 72756". That's more Johnelle Hunt money than Walton money, but it might give you a good idea of Northwest Arkansas's biggest status symbol... A church with a de facto minimum income; otherwise, how would they pay for the pastor's helicopter and 7-figure salary??

Sorry for the rant. Sure, I like shopping at Walmart, and I like seeing capitalism work so well. But it's not without its negatives.

Perhaps they have a program like we used to have here in McAlester. We have Big Mac, where all the very worst types live out their lives and we have Jackie Brannon Correctional Center.

Several years ago Jackie Brannon had a program where local businesses could hire inmates at whatever wage was the going rate. The inmates were at the lowest level of security and were a relatively short time from release. They were always at work because they did not want to hang around the prison and they always had a ride, so they were never late.

They had to turn over a portion of their wages to OSP to cover their upkeep. They made pretty good employees. Most of them were not in for violent offenses.

Another option was to work for the City or Non-profits for no wages, but they got two days off their sentences for each day worked.

I don't really know why they dropped the program, but they did. Not the only place we see them is picking up trash along the highways.

The sad thing is that today's Walmart was never Sam's dream. He wanted to share the wealth. His idea for Sam's Choice products was to have them all made in the USA, re-opening shuttered factories or renting unused manufacturing capacity to produce private label products. When he died, almost overnight, "Made in the USA" disappeared from Sam's Choice products and almost everone else's as well. :cry11:
