Go for the CCL first. It takes a while for it to process and come in. That way, once your license comes in you'll have the finaces to buy the gun. It'll give you time to decide what gun to buy as well.

Get the CCL first. Will take ~60 days to come in. Save money during that time, and buy a gun so that you will have it once your CCL gets approved. Doing it the other way around, makes you wait longer:
Buy gun
Wait ~60 days to have the funds available for the CCW class.
Turn in paperwork to get CCL.
Wait ~60 days to get it approved.

Summary:
Buy CCL, and then gun: 2 months
Buy gun, then CCL: 4 months

It's a simple decision, if you look at it that way

As long as you are buying a Glock, M&P or XDm go ahead. If not, take the class first and then you realize how important the draw to first shot time is. The guys in my class that used pocket pistols or guns with safety buttons were killed (simulated) several times. If you can't draw and make the first shot (accurately) in 1.5 secs or less you need something different.

If you're going with the CCL first, I would get with buddies or check out a gun range that allows you to handle different handguns so you can see which works best for you, that way when you take your CCL class you can experience simulations using the exact tool you'll depend on if simulation turns to reality.
