PATRIOT ACT renewals are a great example of both Republicans and Democrats changing their stance based solely on what will get a measure passed, rather than casting votes based on principles or integrity. It's not a matter of "moderates" flipping back and forth - every renewal vote trends along party lines.
Yep. I love listening to them say "Gitmo couldn't be closed" (et al) in 2009 and 2010 because of the Republicans... when Democrats had control of the head and both armpits of DC.

I thought Bush was way over the line with indefinite detention of those he declared enemy combatants, torture, and extraordinary rendition; but even he didn't have the balls to straight up assassinate American citizens on his personal orders. It took a liberal and perceived civil libertarian like Obama to pull that off. The nonchalance of most of the anti-war, pro civil liberty left over his actions is one example of how few people have anything resembling consistent principles.
