Nope, I have a complex brain. I'm looking for a complex solution to a complex problem. Are you up for developing a solution? Anyone can come-up with the simple, unworkable, and non-practical solutions.

what's it do for you? like "aim high in steering?"
ban data streams:
then traffic will be even worse......everybody will be lost because they can't use google maps to find the nearest starbucks!
Shutting off the data stream is the answer when your in the vehicle, and its moving. Time delay to make sure the stream is still stopped at stop signs works for me.
My GPS can put me within a few feet of where I want to be and tells me when I'm moving or stationary. The same GPS is built into the cell phone. Its a no brainer software addition to make all of that happen. I've read where car manufacturers already have the technology to make this happen, but won't enable it because of customer feedback.
If a federal law is enacted to require that, expect to see it on all new cars.
I've thought this as well. It might be the only way. However, the only problem I can see is how it would effect passengers. It would be nice to have a solution that did not effect the passengers ability to use cell phone data. Also, the driver needs access to GPS navigation on the cell phone.
The ***** that totaled my truck while I was sitting at the stop light was not very good at texting. I think she should have lost her DL on the spot. If I would have been on a bike, she would have killed me.
I don't believe in a problem that cannot be solved. There is usually multiple solutions to any non-mathematical problem. Some solutions maybe radical. You said it yourself, banning cell phones would be a solution. How about vehicles that disables the data stream when the vehicle is moving? That is another radical idea, which I do not propose, but it would stop someone from texting and driving. Controlling behavior requires either an appeal to morality or a fear of consequences. To me, this is a problem where fear of consequences are needed for those who engage in the act of texting and driving.
Seen my share of people crowding lanes while having a phone in their face. Smith Driving teaches me to Look Ahead and Get The Big Picture, so I ease my way around them and keep focused on my surroundings.
.
No the driver doesn't need GPS navigation on the cell phone. There are stand alone GPS units that talk to you, and won't allow use of a phone.
Screw the passengers. They don't have a right to be on the phone. Its a convenience. Remember the old days when people actually talked to each other while driving down the road, and one had a map in their lap to give directions to the driver vs everybody looking at their crotch now?
How in the heck did people before cellphones navigate this country? Maps and memory is how. Road signs are everywhere to direct a driver to an exit, etc.
