Kidd is hard to beat. Based on your requirements for now, I would invest in a Kidd barrel and a Power Custom adj sear trigger kit. That way you would a great barrel and very good trigger. Find a takeoff Ruger laminated target stock and you will have something to head to the range with.

Over a period of time you could nickle and dime it into a full blown Kidd.

Best price on a PC adj sear trigger kit is here

Have you already picked your stock, barrel, and mag release?

I'd check out a couple of pawn shops. You can (read: used to...) find a decent used 10/22 for a reasonable price -- that way you're not paying $200+ for the rifle and hoping to recoup some cash by selling the OE parts.

I'd stick with the Ruger bolt, but have it reworked (radius rear edge, square bolt face, set proper rim thickness) for $45. Also throw in a Volquartsen extractor for $10.

As for the trigger, I've had good luck with simply polishing any bearing surface of the sear, disconnector, and hammer, "rolling my own" overtravel screw, and installing the Wolff spring kit. Note I didn't mention changing any angles or stoning/grinding anything -- just polishing. I can't put a definite weight on the trigger pull, but it's TONS (and MILES) better than the factory setup.

Gratuitous Pic:

I have the Power Custom stoning jig/tool for reworking the factory sear and did the full stone/polish/shim treatment to the factory parts with the wolf spring kit. I was able to get it down safely to a 3 1/4lb trigger pull and greatly improve the factory trigger pull but I wanted to see if I could make it better. It all depends on how nutty you want to go with it.

Yeah, the trigger is my main concern right now. I guess since i'm slowing putting it together its not that big of a deal. I would like a better trigger but don't feel like dropping 200 to 300 bucks on a trigger assembly. I can take apart my guns and do basic maintenance, but I'm not the most handy on polishing and filing triggers, I'm sure I can figure it out, but I'm a little nervous about polishing and messing with gun parts. I guess if I'm ever going learn, a 10-22 is probably the one to learn on. Thanks for all the insight...

Absolutely love all the good first hand advice in here. I like hearing hey I did this and it didn't work. The cheaper part functioned better. Don't care what it costs. I just want quality and that does not always mean more money as has been stated in here. Thanks guys.
