I can't honestly say that there was one place that was the best place I've ever eatin at, but I can name the worst..

Worst place...US Navy....I can relate to JRsherman, I wasn't a submariner, but I spent many many months deployed on a carrier and the food sucked most of the time....I chose to eat fruit most of the time over the meals. I was in the Airwing, so I didn't live on the boat, thankfully the galley on our base served up good chow....being in Japan, the galley was run by Navy cooks, but the food was cooked by local Japanese, so it was fairly good.

Well its the same place. I found this little hole in the wall place down in Appalachicola Florida called the Boss Oyster. This was in 1996, and you had to walk through the kitchen area to get to the tables out back on the dock's. Just plain old picknick tables, and they would cover them in heavy newsprint. Home made ice tea or cold beer, and what ever seafood was in season on the gulf, they had there own fleet of ships. The food was fantastic!!!!!! Well 2008 showed just how much damage yankee's can do to good place, and the food. All the back sitting areas are glassed in, no more picknick tables or newsprint, the menu read like a high priced four star place, ships were gone, and it was on the tourist list's, had a giftshop. Oh well atleast they haven't found the Blue Parrot yet!!!!!

Worst- 3/4 ADA messhall, 82nd Abn Div, Ft. Bragg (Early- mid 80's). So bad, the guys from 3/4 would walk over to our messhall three times per day. We had to eat at their place every other weekend. Better to starve than eat there. Always smelled like someone barfed on the griddle.

Eventually, an investigation turned up a lucrative scam involving low end food being delivered along with the regular stuff, then the regular stuff went downtown. The BN S-4 and Mess Sgt were relieved, but the food didn't improve much.

Best- The original Macaroni Grill, I-10 access rd. in Leon Springs, TX. A bit smaller than the chain versions, but great service and awesome food served in generous portions. Too bad it closed in the mid 90's. Now it's a hair salon or something.

"Best" has as much to do with the mood, company, reason for going and service as it does with the food itself (As long as the food is great).

In regards to military meals mentioned, I have to admit....USAF mess halls are actually pretty good. On Sundays at McChord AFB we'd get steaks cooked to order (in the early '80's), and midnight breakfast was great. It's a volunteer military...hmmm....MRE's or steak....decisions decisions. :P

I've eaten at USAF, Army, and Navy, mess halls. Some are downright inhuman and some are pretty good.

Best- Steakhouse at Circus Circus in Vegas. It is the best steak in vegas. Better that Ruths Chris, better than 9 at the Palms. They have a roll basket, one of the rolls is a pretzel bread roll, imagine a piping hot soft pretzel as a roll, complete with cripsy crust and salt. Butter on up and you will never want to leave. seriously.

Interstate BBQ in Memphis. Alton Brown (Good Eats, food network, iron chef, does the grape juice commercials) said this was the best BBQ he has ever eaten. It was AWFUL! I mean truly gross. crappy service, the sauce was disgusting and it cost a fortune. I don't mind paying a little bit for great food, but I actually lost all respect for Alton Brown that day.

Certainly there have been other greats and lots more bad places, but in terms of expectations, these are the two.

The best mexican I have EVER had was in a hole in the wall in Albequque. God, it was good. Hot, spicy and homemade. incredible. Can't remember the name though.

Do you like chicken? Do you like bacon? Do you like chicken wrapped in bacon? Do you like cheesecake? Do you like bacon? Do you like cheesecake wrapped in bacon? then you will love this place! Joking about the cheesecake, but barely! Another must-eat is Rafain in Dallas. been there since the 60's, it is a brazilian steakhouse, expensive, but its all you can stuff in your face. Classy place, you want to dress up for it. It is probably my 2nd best place to eat, ever. http://www.rafain.com/home/

It's hard to pin it down.

One the best I've had has to be Eddie V's in Austin. Best Ribeye I've ever had (outside of cooking my own).

The worst had to be over in England (pick any restaurant). For being so involved in spice trade and India in the past...I don't think they ever learn how to use spices. It had to be the most bland tasteless food I've ever had. Then again, I'm a spice-aholic. :)

I was in England for a couple of months for work a few years ago. I was dying for anything resembling Mexican food. In a pub in London they had Nachos on the menu. OMG. Not even close. The sauce tasted more like ketchup. :disappoin

I will say there were some very good Chinese and Indian food restaurants in the London area.
