As a test could you leave that charging handle unlatched and fire off a round?

If the bolt/bolt carrier is fully closed (which it would need to be in order to fire a round) then the charging handle would also be fully forward and therefore latched. The only way to fire off a round with the charging handle unlatched would be to somehow disable the latch.

wow all the m-16's i handled in the army, a1's in the beginning then a2's later on, you could unlatch the charging handle and it didn't pull on anything for atleast 1/4 to 1/2 an inch when it grabbed the gas tube on top of the bolt. I didn't realize they had designed all the slop out of the charging handles nowadays, sorry i'll try to catch up.
