You have me watching sidebar videos of them now. Some more than decent fiddle skills to say the least. Coolness.

I was never a huge western swing fan, but my dad is. So I heard more than my share of it growing up. Though if you like country, you have to like western swing...it's vital. All the outlaw/cosmic cowboy/folk/Parsons country rock stuff (my tastes) would not be possible without swing & the king.

+1.
That's because George sings Texas cowboy music.

Waylon & Willie and the boys sing outlaw country.

Nah, they're just better than George. :D

If I hear "George" and "country" in the same sentence, I'm thinking of The Possum. Greatest living country artist? The Possum is right up there.

My wife still likes Conway Twitty for them belly rubbing songs.

george's early albums really were good texas, cowboy, swing, honkytonk music. since then it seems to have become much more commercialized mega seller nashville stuff, with a few token cowboy and texas songs thrown in here and there. i would consider him just country, not really texas or cowboy music. for the most part, the good cowboy or texas singers/bands dont get much air play

I might be a metal musician and metal listening fan but I like George when it comes to listening to country. Smooth performer, maybe a little too polished for some nowadays, but it was him getting big and his move to playing arenas that required him to change to perfectly choreographed shows and a big sound, same as Garth Brooks. I talked about it with Garth one day at Guitar Center in Tulsa and how he longed for the old days of smaller more intimate shows. Its just a transition that is inevitable when you get really big. You get a bigger band, better gear, you get writers writing your songs now because the label wants hits and not misses and doesnt trust the artist and since its their money you do what youre told to do. One of my dads ex employees,an Okie too,Ty England, never has got that big thankfully and he still sounds like himself.

I prefer David Allan Coe
Hells ya. One of my bands played a show in Lawrence,Ks way back in the day and he was in town for a show so he was in the venue that night with friends getting drunk and came and talked to us after our set. He loved metal music. He invited us all out to the parking lot on to his tour bus and we drank with him and his crew all night. The last time I had talked to him was in Pawhuska,Ok at the big bike rally where he was the headliner and he remembered me some how. Funny, Ive got the record he did with Dimebag and Vinnie Paul,'Rebel Meets Rebel', in rotation in my Blazers CD changer now. "Cowboys Do More Dope" is hilarious. I remember his Xrated stuff ("suck em silly Shirley...",etc).

I never would have believed 20 something years ago that I'd like half the music I do. Chances are if it is country on the radio, it is not for me. George Jones is the king of country in the "George" catagory. I don't care much for the bubble gum, rockish stuff today.

I like Merle Haggard, but it's really his older stuff that I appreciate more, like "My Own Kind of Hat," or "Erma Jackson."

I love western swing, and like "old time" music as well, but then I'm a fiddler, so I think it's a law or something.:violin:

Although I do not care for almost any of Toby Keith's music, I VERY much appreciate the fact that he is still an Oklahoman, and invests IN Oklahoma. Total respect for him because of that. Not like that looser Garth What's-his-face, or Brad Pitt, for that matter.:loser:

George Straight is okay, but I'd much rather listen to Lyle Lovett.

Those Quebe Sisters are really something, aren't they? That is all live too. No recording studio magic. They are the real deal!
