I had a cheapo $45 NCStar 2MOA red-dot/laser lying around when I got my AR, so I thought what the heck, I'll give it a try.

I couldn't have been more pleased with the results.

I sighted it in at 25 yards, and had no problem hitting what I was aiming at out to 300 yards. Even hitting a 18" steel target at 400 yards was easy with the proper holdover.

I put near 500 rounds through the rifle with the red-dot mounted, and it never failed.

I would never use this setup in a battlefield or SHTF situation, but it worked very well for target shooting at the range.

My point is that you don't have to have a high dollar red-dot or scope to enjoy shooting your AR.

Much cheaper from someone other than PFI

I have the Bushnell on my rifle, several thousand rounds down range and no zero shift.

I got a woot deal on the PFI and put it on my wife's rifle, I really like the tombstone reticle on it, but it has not been tortured to the point that my Bushnell has.

But from what I understand it's supposed to be a decent quality reliable piece of kit.

Can anyone make a recommendation for a good yet affordable Red Dot for my AR-15. Looking for something serviceable for around $100. I understand that I will need to upgrade if the SHTF.

These are the 2 items i had used that were affordable and werent bad at all.

UTG 3x Flip-to-Side Red Dot Magnifier SCP-MF3WQS

UTG 3.9" ITA Red/Green Dot Sight with Riser Adaptor, QD Mount & Flip-open Lens Caps
Item No.: SCP-DS3039W

Opinions on this setup , feel free to add opinions on better magnifiers and red/green dot sights.

EDIT: I see you want it specifically for the AR15. You probably want a riser mount, so I wouldn't get the Bushnell TPS-25. I would get a aimpoint clone like the Primary Arms. PA is out of stock at the moment, sign up and get notified.

I would not get a cheap mount. The ADM, daniel defense, and LaRue mounts are great. Be sure to get the correct one for the primary arms red dot, the base on the PA red dot is a little thicker than the real aimpoint so it requires a different height mount to co-witness with the irons.

2nd edit: Don't bother with the cheap flip magnifiers. Lower-end scopes can be useable, cheap magnifiers not so much. years later you won't remember what it cost... you will never get over a optic that isn't "good enough" to meet some minimum level of workatude.

Bushnell TPS-25 is a good unit. They were $80 from B&H photo video recently.
Only problem, if you leave the power on, you will have a dead battery in months.
They're fine for a plinker, maybe even hunting if you carry a spare battery.

If somebody was shooting back at me I'd want an aimpoint Micro T-1.
The Aimpoint micro battery will go something like 5 years. I guess that's what you get when you pay $600.

Fortunately, I can go weeks at a time without someone shooting at me. Thousands of weeks, to be exact...
