It's definitely an inexpensive way to try one out.

I don't use the k-cups with mine but with those it works just like a Keurig. I use the filter basket and add my own coffee.

They are super convenient if you only have one person having one cup of coffee a day, or houseguests that are the only one that like to have coffee at odd hours so you don’t have to brew an entire pot.

However, talking to a nutritionist, they mentioned that the K cups are extremely prone to getting mold inside them and she calls them cancer cups. Just something to be aware of and research on your own.

And then there is always the poor over option and you can use fresh gound or the contents of a k cup pod is the perfect amount for a cup.

Mine is about 12 years old. I use the heck out of it. On warmer days I usually drink 1 cup so no need for a full pot.

I've even proven this at one of my businesses where some of my employees said the same "nope"

For fun, it was a taste test between 3 options:

Keurig (Basic K cups)
Instant (I think it was Folgers?)
Brewed (Standard coffee pot - I don't remember brand but it was Basic)

The standard brewed got the most "First place" votes. The Keurig and Instant tied as "Generic"

This was 20+ coffee drinkers so my point is that for a person on a budget like the OP (and drinking a very rare black coffee) it makes complete sense to just buy some instant coffee and save the novelty of a Keurig...you are talking about ordering K cups which is not likely what OP is intending.

To me, the most important characteristic of coffee (assuming it's packaged using quality beans to start with) is that it be freshly brewed. I really dislike the taste of stale, hours-old coffee. I've tried a bunch of brands of K-cups and finally settled on Starbuck's Pike Place or Starbuck's Sumatra as my favorites. Every time I have another cup, even if it happens to be hours later, it's a freshly brewed cup, and at Sam's Club the cost is about 45¢ per cup when purchased in 72-cup boxes. If I brewed a full pot of drip coffee every morning, 80% of it would be poured out at the end of the day. I also like an occasional cup of Earl Grey tea, and the K-cup maker does a fine job of instant very hot water for tea bags. You can even buy Earl Grey in K-cup format, although that would be for sure a waste of money compared to bags.

Those are great! We had one for many years before it gave up. Now have a coffee ninja that whips, steams, fraps etc. Quit doing all that stuff when cuisinart died

I like expresso but am too lazy to go through the hassle of brewing it at home.
