Went out to run some errands and was on my way home when my mirrors lit up. I was going 50 in a 45 so I knew that had to be it. Edmond PD comes up to my window and I hand him my DL and CCL. He asks where my gun is and I tell him it's holstered at my 3:30. He asks me to not make any grabs for it and I respond, "No problem."

He notices my Tinker badge in my cup holder and asks me what I do there. He's ex-Navy and we talk about my work for a bit. It wasn't until he was handing me back my licenses (which he never bothered to run) that he told me why he pulled me over -- tag light is out. I chuckled and said, "I thought it was because I was speeding."

Either way, I was a little nervous considering it was my first time, but he was totally casual and cool about it. We discussed how I work the graveyard shift and since it was after 10:30 he asked, "You're not going straight to work now, are you?" I wasn't, but he said, "I'm sure you know to drop it off first." I acknowledged. He continued, "Which is just insane considering what happened at Ft Hood. What are they thinking?"

I know that bad cops get more hate than good cops get love, so I wanted to share another great interaction with those trusted to protect and serve. With his comment about Ft Hood, it shows that there's one more LEO out there who not only tolerates, but supports, us.

It is all in the attitude you display, and he liked your attitude.

I personally don't like it when the permit holder is cheerfull and notifiies the officer he / she is carrying... keeping his hand in view & away from his weapon... and then the officer says something dumb like... 'Don't grab for it!" or 'Keep your hand away from it!" ... like the co-operative permit holder didn't have good sense.

I know of a guy to whom a LEO said something like that to him when he was being co-operative and friendly...it ticked him off so he popped off back at the officer that if he had been gonna grab for his gun, he wouldn't have ever handed the officer his licence in the first place.. he'd have just drove off or shot him. Strangely, the traffic stop went dramaticly down hill from there. Go figure.

I had my left arm, with licenses, resting on my door (my window was down) and my right hand on the top of my steering wheel. When he said not to grab for it, it was a totally relaxed, non-threatening command and I didn't get the slightest feeling he was uncomfortable with me carrying or even slightly worried that I was even considering drawing.

Interesting that he told you not to grab for your gun, but he never asked you to not grab for his gun. Had you done so, theoretically, he could not have complained about it later. That's what I would have done.

I'll try that next time, I'm sure it'll be good for a laugh. After all, even cops like jokes!
