Why is an unholy country fighting a holy war? We are trying to impose freedom from religion on countries that want religion. We could bomb them into oblivion and accomplish nothing but make martyrs of them. They'll just come back and bring their jihad right here into the middle of the homeland. It's time to get out and leave them to their own devices.
No. We need to take care of our own for a change. It is far past the time to bring everyone home from all over the world. Turn the bases in Europe into NATO bases, and rotate troops in and out on a schedule, no more permanently stationed troops outside the US. Do the same thing in the Pacific as well.
If there is an opposition group that we think is reliable and reasonably oriented toward the West, specifically the U.S., I would support sending them arms, and IF Syria is using air delivered poison gas, etc., I favor imposing a no-fly zone but that's about it. The opposition will still have to fight and win on the ground. I am not opposed to trying to influence the outcome to turn out more favorably for our strategic interests, I am just concerned that we don't get into a long-term, troop heavy commitment on the ground.
There isn't a pro-USA side. They both hate us so I say we stay out of it. Getting involved won't win us any friends with either side.
When extremist muslims are killing other extremist muslims, we win. Just look at Libya. Should have let that drag on for as long as possible. We need to stay the hell out of it and let these nutballs kill each other.

We can expand the scope of this thread - but what you're saying isn't true. There are factions more supportive of working with the West - the issue is can they come out on top or is it a lost cause.
That is exactly the wrong position - what we did was wait out assisting the "more" moderate groups and ceded a huge amount of influence to Iranian backed groups. This "defense starts and ends at the border" nonsense might have been suited to the 18th century but it is failing before our eyes in the Middle East. BTW - before you start fighting a straw man - the alternative is NOT solely large scale intervention ala Afghanistan and Iraq.
