Today at the Porum landing fire department turkey shoot. I won a turkey, and my daughter got to shoot her great grandfathers 20 ga. First time it's been shot in decades.

No need for smaller plates, start shooting it in double action. That will develop the skills.
I have a double action 22 that I just basically can't shoot in double action. The trigger pull is so heavy in double action that I almost can't get it back and I sure can't get it on the edge before it fires so I can take aim. It has a great soft trigger in single action though so I pretty much only shoot it that way. But I sure don't think I can hit many 6 inch plates at 25 yards with it.

We drove by there and saw the sign. I thought about pulling in but I didn’t have anything to shoot so I kept going.
Good on you for taking your kiddo.

Master that double action trigger and you will be amazed at how well you start shooting other guns. The heavy trigger pull simply magnifies poor trigger technique that an extremely light trigger masks the symptoms of. Granted a 10-12# revolver DA trigger is difficult to master, but the satisfaction of constantly hitting those plates at 25y is awesome.

@HJB Like you I prefer to shoot single action simply because I can hit a lot more often than when I fire the gun double action......it's just a lot more fun to hit the gong than it is to miss it but I may start trying double action more often in the future.

You may already be doing it but back in the spring I started really focusing on the front sight and it has helped me hit more often......in doing this my rear sight and the target are slightly out of focus but the front sight is sharp.

Oh, don't get the idea that I hammer the 6" gong as good as I did the other day each time I go to the the range.......some days I can't even hit the 25 yd. berm let alone the gongs. :)

In the picture below if you really concentrate on the front sight all of the black dots will disappear.

The below video is pretty much the sight picture I have when concentrating on the front sight .........slightly fuzzy rear sight and target but clear front sight.

Oh I have no problem with accuracy or focusing on the front sight with any of my guns. I only shoot the 22 revolver as a novelty item and I completely understand the front sight focus on all of my pistols. I don't shoot the revolver very often because it is an old, 9 shot High Standard Double Nine that I actually found in my son-in-law's gun cabinet that he had for 25 years and never shot it, so I took it and cleaned it up and shoot it some.

But it is a PITA to clean with 9 cylinders and so I don't shoot it often. It's about a 60 year old gun and in excellent condition so it's fun to have around and show to people. But the double action trigger is a known to be, extremely heavy trigger and I don't think many people who shoot it double action. I don't ever shoot it 25 yards. 15 yards is about as far as I ever try to shoot it.
