SHTF - you have to grab a rifle and try to help your neighbors stop a band of rioters that just entered your neighborhood.

Your AR is disabled at the moment and you only have two choices - an AK or a Mini-14. Which one do you choose, and why?

I was prepared and just grabbed the CMMG MK47 aside from the other two spare AR15s.

AK is my choice because when it comes to fighting and being within 25 yards where I would likely actually have to engage a problem, that 30 caliber bullet is going to make things better. 😂

I can see that logic.
I'd grab the Mini, simply because it uses ammunition that would likely be easier to replace.

Either one would work, both are extremely reliable.

I did have a weird problem with a mini 14 years ago. 580 series, CH would come off of the receiver “track” during firing. Id call it a catastrophic malfunction because you couldnt unwedge it easily! But aside from that, the mini 14 was and is quite a good little carbine.

AK hands down. Before I say more, the Mini 14 is a good rifle, and get it's fair share of abuse for past production problems. The 5.56 is a good round, perhaps not as much as the 7.62 X 39. The AK is a good rifle as well. The reason I'd go with the AK is the menacing appearance, rioters and other miscreants recognize the shape, and know it means business. Even non gun people know what it is. The Mini 14 just doesn't look as threatening in a crowd situation.

Factors to consider that weren't outlined in OP:
1. condition of the Mini and the AK
2. number of spare magazines available for each
3. amount of ammo available for each

If either rifle was a real piece of crap, but I had more mags and ammo for it.....I'd go with the more reliable rifle and conserve mags and ammo......thing has to go bang every time when it's on the line.

Yes, AKs are very reliable....but if I had a real piece of crap AK sitting on a stack of ammo and mags, I'd still go with the more reliable platform...YMMV....

I own 4 ARs and 1 AK if SHTF I’m grabbing my AK it’s a reliable simple rifle and 100 yrds in your toast. I can hit steal out to 400 all day with it. I have plenty of mags and stocked with ammo. Then I’m grabbing my 14.5 AR 556 .. just my opinion
