Your Doc is wrong.
I have always been a loud snorer, in school my roomie would ask me to go to sleep an hour after he went to bed so he could sleep. At deer camp, I was banned from the cabin and had to sleep in my truck camper. Used to smoke and loved the good whiskey, afterwards is was really bad. So bad my dove hunting buddies reserved a single for me, I've run 2 of them out of the room. In KC, after a football game, woke the next morning to find my brother sleeping in the truck.
My older has had sleep ap for several years and warned me about the effects. My mom had been on me for several years to get it checked. My current gal, mentioned every other day until I just gave in Dammit.
Glad I did. The study showed my oxygen concentration in my blood was at 51%, as it was explained to me 49-48% is coma, under 46% is stroke, heart attack and/or death. I was having 48 episodes of apnea per hour (waking due to lack of oxygen) over 12 is rated as severe. The sleep team didn't have a machine that would blow enough pressure and the test was called early (6 1/2 hours).
I was put on a bipap with a full face mask, cranked as high as it would go. Thank God, blood pressure dropped, oxygen concentration at 91-97 %, fully rested when I awake, don't get tired at 3 anymore. Dropped 30 pounds. Feel great. Won't travel or spend the night anywhere without my machine.
I didn't have insurance when I did all this and yes it was expensive but far less than what you would expect, if you pay cash (65% off). It would have been worth it at full price. Some mentioned throat drying? Machines have built in humidfiers now. Does the mask suck at first? Big Yes. Took me 3-4 weeks to get used to it.

Sleep apnea can and will kill you, go get the study done. If you have questions please PM me. My brother was a big help during the break in period with my machine. One other thing, you will kinda sound like Darth Vader.

No need to apologize. GREAT post.

The more I study this stuff, the more intrigued and motivated I become.

Your comment that "Sleep apnea may be the cause of more deaths than are thought because they get attributed to something else" is spot on.

No one just "dies in their sleep".

Recent studies are showing that as many as 25% of all auto accidents are directly related to sleep disorders (sleep apnea). Good Morning America just ran a piece last week about people falling asleep at the wheel. Just for a few seconds in some cases. I had done it. People think, ah just for two or three seconds, that's no big deal. Well when you are traveling at 75 mph, that comes out to 110 feet per second. Go to sleep for just three seconds (1-2-3) and you have traveled from one goal post on a football field to the other ASLEEP.

In addition, there seems to be a direct link to weight gain and sleep apnea. For that past several years, everyone has thought "heavy person = sleep apnea" lose the weight and you will lose the sleep apnea. Well, it looks like the reverse may actually be true. Sleep related breathing disorders affect the hormones that control your eating desires. Sleep disorders can actually be the cause of weight gain and not the reverse.

Last year at this time, I had no idea how much I didn't know or understand about this stuff. It has only been a few years that the dental field has gotten really involved in this stuff. It is the most exciting thing I have done in dentistry in I don't know how long.

Dave

Somewhat off topic...a hunting buddy gave me his tip to stay awake when driving. Hold you wallet out of the window. You WON'T fall asleep.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate all the input.
Looks like I'll be doing a sleep study in the near future.
I suspect a CPAP machince is due. Not looking forward to it, but I'll give it a strong try.

Any recommendations for the Norman area?
I saw the 'PM me' comments - but if you've got a good contact in the Norman area, post it up.
I'm sure there's other Norman folks reading with similar issues.

Thanks again! I appreciate it a lot.
And hopefully my wife will also.

Dr. Joseph Leonard at Oklahoma Otolaryngology Associates in Norman. They're on Porter, across the street from Norman Regional (in the same building as Physicians & Surgeons Pharmacy). I don't have his number handy, but I do have it in my desk at work if you need it.

I have sleep Apena and the cpap made a huge different as many have said. I also like the outdoors, camping and hiking where you can't take a machine. I went to a dentist for an oral appliance called the Moses. It moves the lower jaw forward opening the back of your throat more. It's not as good as a cpap, but when I'm away from power in the woods it works enough to make a Hugh difference .

Now I just need to figure out how to lose 35lbs. That my challenge. Good luck on your sleep study. Once they out the o2 measure on you that will likely begin your process
