Everytime he thinks about slapping anyone, at least anyone you don't want him to, WHACK him with that Dollar General fly swatter...yes, fly swatter.

This was the....Hmmmm, "Daconian" or should I say the "Pavlov's Dog Experiment" Poppa Cohiba used on me...baby Cohiba.

As I progressed through my growing years, my father progressed with his "learning sessions"...he found out, Wal-Mart had a better solution for a "better" treatment.

He went and bought the cheapest water hose he could find, cut off about four foot of it, and everytime I became "Unruly", Wal-Mart cured my problems.

I think the problem is already out of control. Five is plenty old enough to know not to slap anybody ... If he was mine, time out would just be the beginning, not the end of his punishment.

And as far as spanking goes ... I can count the number of times on one hand I spanked my total of three children. But as God is my witness, they knew I meant business when it happened.

However, as with all things in life, YMMV ...

ETA: And as bad a mother as my mom was, none of us would have survived slapping her. My dad would have made sure of it.

You are in line with my thinking. At 5, I don't think he knew better, but he should from now on.

Man, maybe my kids are right ... maybe I am a hard-azz ... because I think 5 is plenty old to know not to slap others.

Funny though, every single one of them has come to me at about 23, 24, 25 and said thanks for not letting them "grow up stupid".

Man o man. He'd have got his little @ss lit up by his mom, then me, then me some more, and then maybe once more after he stopped crying just to give him something to cry about.
5 year old kids may or may not understand about slaps, but the damned well better know about raising a hand to their parents.
I am a hardass when it comes to discipline and I'm not afraid to admit it. my kids will (and have) learn like I did. And they will be much better off than those little bast... children who have no respect for people, shoot other kids cause their shoe got smudged, or commit suicide cause they were bullied.
