Learn new stuff every day. That'll keep your brain functioning. It's good to say, "Holy excrement! I never knew that!" once in a while.

Viagra potentially keeps your brain functioning as well.😂

Dec. 8, 2021 -- The erectile dysfunction medication Viagra could potentially be used as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Aging.

Patients who used the drug sildenafil, the generic name for Viagra, were 69% less likely to develop the disease than nonusers.

“Sildenafil, which has been shown to significantly improve cognition and memory in preclinical models, presented as the best drug candidate,” Feixiong Cheng, PhD, the lead study author in the Cleveland Clinic’s Genomic Medicine Institute, said in a statement.

“Notably, we found that sildenafil use reduced the likelihood of Alzheimer’s in individuals with coronary artery disease, hypertension and type 2 diabetes, all of which are comorbidities significantly associated with risk of the disease, as well as in those without,” he said.

Alzheimer’s, which is the most common form of age-related dementia, affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide. The disease is expected to affect nearly 14 million Americans by 2050. There is no approved treatment for it.

Cheng and colleagues at the Cleveland Clinic used a large gene-mapping network to analyze whether more than 1,600 FDA-approved drugs could work against Alzheimer’s. They gave higher scores to drugs that target both amyloid and tau proteins in the brain, which are two hallmarks of the disease. Sildenafil appeared at the top of the list.

Then the researchers used a database of health insurance claims for more than 7 million people in the U.S. to understand the relationship between sildenafil and Alzheimer’s disease outcomes. They compared sildenafil users to nonusers and found that those who used the drug were 69% less likely to have the neurodegenerative disease, even after 6 years of follow-up.

After that, the research team came up with a lab model that showed the sildenafil increased brain cell growth and targeted tau proteins. The lab model could indicate how the drug influences disease-related brain changes.

But Cheng cautioned against drawing strong conclusions. The study doesn’t demonstrate a causal relationship between sildenafil and Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers will need to conduct clinical trials with a placebo control to see how well the drug works.

After 61 years I'm worn out. I have had lot of fun in my life, been a lot of places , seen a lot of things. There are things I wish I'd done and thing's I wish I hadn't done can't change it and don't think I would change it if I could.
Now I'm growing old and outlived my usefulness, between injuries and illness I can't do the things I always enjoyed. I guess the cycle of life. Do the things you want to do in your life. Don't waste any of it you can't get it back.
I understand brother.

I've been tired for a long time myself. Health issues, money's tight, and not much to get excited about doing when everything seems to cost so much. Not everyone is blessed with the health and the means to enjoy life as much as others do, but I accept that and just keep plugging on.

Sounds like someone needs some young people in their life. What did you do for a living before you got tuckerd out?

There are kids out there right now from 14-18 that are dying to learn how to do the stuff you used to do and don't have a father or grandpa to teach them. You can mentor a kid and get a ton of energy all of a sudden, and more importantly it gives you purpose. You've always got to have purpose.

Ask your pastor about starting a trades group and just teach them on Saturdays for two weekends every couple of months. What's that you say? You were a grocery stocker for 50 years and never grew any skills aside from stacking apples? No problem! Go to Youtube and learn something yourself, THEN teach kids. And remember to keep your mouth clean while it's going on.
Some things off the top of my head: Framing, sheetrock, roofing, concrete, plumbing, maybe even electrical if it's a small group and you can stay on top of them.

As long as you're keeping busy and interested in something you'll never get old.

Or if you're wealthy enough you can just go chase younger women. You'll die faster and still be a worthless old coot, but you'll die with a smile on your face disappointing some gold digger that deserved it anyway.

I hear ya!

I was going great at 64, getting ready to ready to retire and had my bucket list set in go.

Turned 65 and feeling old, tired, worn out and wondering what is next.

Of course, I turned 65 while in the hospital with Coved. 2 months on O2 and barely able to walk from bedroom to kitchen.
But, I am working at getting better, every day.

I am not ready to check out. It will take me 20 years to get through that bucket list.

I deal with young people everyday in prison. use to think I was doing some good ,now it seems fruitless maybe 1 in 20 doesn't come back and the toll on my old broken body feels like too much

That's the wrong kind of young people. Kinda like eating rotten peaches off the ground and deciding peaches don't taste good. Get around them before they're broken, that's why I suggested getting involved with your pastor. Kids that want to learn and look to you to teach them will give you the greatest thrill you've had.

Don't give up now. I did 20+ years in the Army and now at 60 I'm teaching young soldiers how to shoot down airplanes. I'm going to do this for a few more years and the plan is to sell a couple of our houses and buy a sailboat and sail around the Caribbean till the sharks get me. I've had a hip replaced and feel great for being 60. Can I run a marathon?.. No. But I still want to live life to the fullest. Sailing, camping, skydiving, etc. If you are retired take advantage of your time to do more stuff that you haven't done yet. Have you been to Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, etc.? Enjoy life while you can.
There will be plenty of time to rest in the grave! A very smart man, a real philosopher, once said, " It ant dying I'm talkling about, it's living!" Gus McCrea of Lonesome Dove!

In no way have you outgrown or outlived your usefulness. Life is full of change and sometimes we cannot do the things we use to enjoy. The good news is there are always new things to learn and experience. Hang in there and do not get discouraged. We all have our ups and downs in life. Hang on to the good memories and focus on the day to day. Things will turn around.
If you ever want to get together to have a bite to eat or grab a coffee, let me know. I would love to get together.
