Had a 68 Mustang that had a foot pedal on the left side of the firewall (where dimmer pedals used to be) that activated the windshield wiper/washer fluid. Drove my girlfriend crazy as she thought it just randomly activated for no reason at all.

That foot switch to the right of the gas pedal was not an electrical contact switch. The foot stomp six cylinder starter doesn't have a solenoid and relies on your foot pushing the pedal to move the starter drive.

I think Dad's pickup was an International and the starter button was just to the right of the accelerator. One could have their right foot on both the accelerator and the start switch at the same time. I did find this picture online, although I can't say it is of an International.

It’s the starter switch, the key just energizes the electrical system
Back in those days, the key was just a two pole switch to complete a circuit that allowed the engine to start. Flip a half or silver dollar under the dash to make contact and the start switch on the floor was armed to start the vehicle.
I hate to say it, but that's how joy riding got started. Not that I'm admitting to anything btw........
I've heard back when that was happening, the peeps just drove it around a bit and returned it unharmed.
