Well, you talked me into it. I just ordered Bulletproof's EGR cooler replacement. You guys have me worried about an implosion before it gets here.

A ford truck with a cummins motor and an Allison trans would be perfect.

I used to think the same until about a month ago I made a trip thru NE Kansas, about 45 minutes NE of Independance with a 30' trailer to pick up 9 head of cattle. Somewhat curvy an frequent small hills. I was driving a 2003 Duramax 4x4 with only 68,000 and that Allison did nothing but search for gears the entire trip. When I thought it should be down shifting, it was doggy. When I was accelerating it would'nt shift up and sounded like that duramax was coming thru the firewall. Averaged 7.6 mpg driving 60-70mph. This was my first Duramax haul and my last, I'll take my powerstroke anyday over that. I've hauled similar weight with my 6.0l with no issues and still got 12mgp. Is this the norm?

IDK. I have just always heard good things about Allison trannys and we have one in a spray truck that takes a lot of abuse. Really for pulling one ought to have a manual.

Power stroke will probably pull with a little more power but the cummins have fewer mechanical troubles in my experience. There is a reason most big rigs run a straight 6. Just not a fan of the v-8 diesel with the exception being the 7.3 L power stroke.

It can be done cab on, the trick is getting the turbo off in order to take the intake off. The intake will be full of soot (caked on) and should be vat dipped or otherwise cleaned good. Get an experienced helper and an overhead creeper and you will be done in a day.
But mainly I would flush the coolant. thats easy.

Truth ^^^ As a matter of fact you can change the whole engine cab on. My BIL changed his 6.0L twice! The Bullydog got sold after that. lol

The coolant is also the truth. Use whatever the latest word from Ford is. They change things from time to time. My Edge has a TSB on the heater core clogging and and special flush chemical and procedure to clean out the original stuff. And they also specify to go to the premium gold stuff. But it's not diesel either. Bottom line is use what they say to use now. Not 3 or 6 years ago when they printed your owners manual.

I have done several 6.0 head gaskets, and EGR deletes without pulling the cab. Im sure it makes it easier but it doesn't have to be done that way and labor times aren't figured on pulling the cab either. Just one of those things that makes beating the clock easier.

This was my only experience with one, other than in fire trucks, and an A3 deuce, and they seem to be flawless and perfect for their application. Agreed on the 7.3 and the 5.9 cummins. The guy I farm for in the summer has a 90 and 91 dodge 4x4's flatbeds. The 90 has over 500,000 miles on it, it's held together with wire, chain and dried mud but the motor and tranny are almost untouched.

Ford still says to use their Gold Coolant which you should absolutely NOT use. It has silicates and will clog your oil cooler which will stop flow through the EGR cooler and that's what kills your engine. Change the Ford Gold crap ASAP and get some Cat EC1 rated coolant in there.
