Law aside...600 yards is nowhere near far enough away for an occupied dwelling in the line of fire of an outdoor/non-contained range. Even with a berm. If you had baffles maybe, but it’s still a risky proposition.

The neighbors don’t have a pot to piss in but the folks downrange do. I wouldn’t be shooting in that direction if I lived there.

I agree they are jerks.
I thought I read about public road somewhere where it had the same rules as the public assembly or dwelling.
I am probably wrong..I have known to be wrong.

Yea you are lucky to be out of the city limits. Wish i was.
I worked 3:30 to midnight for many years and installed 4 mufflers on my hot rod nova to try and quiet it down so i would not wake the neighbors.
Did not seem to work.. some neighbors just suck.. luckily they moved and all the ones here are awesome.
Kind of helps I fix all their busted things for them and their kids.
I wasn’t trying to sound like a jerk with my reply. I just have never seen that and I have read our laws about 100 times. Also, ordinances vary by county. I know in Potawatomie there isn’t a noise ordinance out of city limits. Heck even Tecumseh didn’t have a noise ordinance when I was in high school. And that was in city limits. I would blare my system everyday and the cops wouldn’t do a thing. But the second you broke the speed limit you were pulled over and given a ticket. Lol. Yeah living out here is nice. I wish it was more remote than what it is but I’m not gonna complain. I am surrounded my forest and a creek. I would never live in town. I just couldn’t do it. But my wife loves the country too. Even if she didn’t I wouldn’t live in town. If I ever have the money I will get a place on at least 20 acres out here but I don’t know if I will ever be able to swing that. Land out here is super expensive. It’s a highly desired area so it comes with a premium. We can all dream though.

But they aren’t in the line of fire. They aren’t directly behind me. And there is thick forest between us. I would never fire directly at a dwelling or anything. Those people also shoot and do it towards us. I can here it all the time. The guy I bought my place from is a shawnee police officer and he is who installed the berm. I’m not doing anything that is unsafe or I wouldn’t do it. And I don’t think a round is gonna go through by 15 foot thick berm.

I did not think you sounded like a jerk at all.
My panties do not get twisted up that easy. :)

Man, this could go south quickly. If you've got someone anti-gun that's moved in, the Sheriff will start getting calls about "ricochets bouncing off the barn" or "ricochets whizzing overhead" and other stuff that can't be proven, saw it happen with a friend of mine.

Best bet might be for a neighborhood eat n shoot. Get acquainted with all the folks and let them see that you're not a menace. A handful of neighbors on your side would go a long way if the anti ever starts making a stink.

And if that doesn't work, burn their house down...:thumb:

Exactly what happened at my house. We have one neighbor 300 yards away and my berm is set up so I’m shooting away from her house with my house at my back. The drop out area behind my berm is over 3 miles with no one living there.
She’s a retired schoolteacher that is basically an evil person in general. Her husband left her and her two kids went to live with relatives when they were young because they couldn’t stand her.
She has called the sheriff and GW’s on me more than once for bullets hitting her house.
Of course none ever has, but that’s her excuse to try and stop the shooting.
The folks that own the unoccupied land around us deer hunt, so every time one of them fires a gun, she calls again to report Bullets hitting her house.
I know about her past history because my cousin is married to the son that left her and still has nothing to do with her.

This is one of my biggest fears if I lived in the country...some idiot shooting a rifle within range of my house & family without a proper backstop. YOU do it right and YOU know that you do. But the neighbor doesn't know that; the cops should have gone to the neighbor and told them you were doing it in a safe manner and it wasn't just teens horsing around without any safety. Lotta people with guns (especially teens and kids) who do not have the proper training or supervision but go "out in the country" to shoot anyway. That's how you hear about accidents like when the baby got hit by a rifle bullet while being rocked in a chair by his grandpa inside a house.

I think an inspection of the situation by the cops or better yet by a courteous neighbor is all that is needed to prevent tragedies. But none the less, YOU were not doing anything wrong so it is annoying when someone questions you and you KNOW you're doing right. I think the cop shoulda offered to go tell the neighbor it's safe.
