This is one of my biggest fears if I lived in the country...some idiot shooting a rifle within range of my house & family without a proper backstop. YOU do it right and YOU know that you do. But the neighbor doesn't know that;

This is my situation.

I live on 40 acres and the neighbors all around me have either 5 or 10 acres. People shoot frequently and some of it bothers me and some doesn't. I don't know them nor do I know their weapons handling skills. Didn't a kid get killed in Noble by a LEO a few years ago with a stray bullet? The guy in the 5 acres south of me shoots towards my land and I have seen trees with damage so I know his rounds impact on my land. My kids walk around back there and ride UTVs on my land. The last thing I want is one them to catch a stray bullet from Jack wagon with no back stop.

I get it. Its your land and you have rights. just trying to get you to think about what somebody else might be thinking. I spent a few thousand on a berm for me to shoot and to this day I haven't pulled the trigger. Maybe one day.

Yeah, sent the link to my father. He hates mowing his yard and lives in a commiefornia hoa. Told him to seed the yard in them and call it a natural flower habitat.

I might just buy some to toss out here and there while I am out there the next time and spread the beauty. Wonder how many people I can irritate with that one.

This is one of my biggest fears if I lived in the country...some idiot shooting a rifle within range of my house & family without a proper backstop. YOU do it right and YOU know that you do. But the neighbor doesn't know that; the cops should have gone to the neighbor and told them you were doing it in a safe manner and it wasn't just teens horsing around without any safety. Lotta people with guns (especially teens and kids) who do not have the proper training or supervision but go "out in the country" to shoot anyway. That's how you hear about accidents like when the baby got hit by a rifle bullet while being rocked in a chair by his grandpa inside a house.

I think an inspection of the situation by the cops or better yet by a courteous neighbor is all that is needed to prevent tragedies. But none the less, YOU were not doing anything wrong so it is annoying when someone questions you and you KNOW you're doing right. I think the cop shoulda offered to go tell the neighbor it's safe.
I agree with you. I know that is why the deputy wanted to check out my setup. And once he saw I wasn’t just wildly firing into the woods he was ok. I do think it would have been nice had he went and told them everything was fine.

I can understand why you would be upset with people knowingly shooting into your land and hitting your trees. I wouldn’t like that either. People shooting never bothers me. Unless it was hitting my stuff. Then it would. Or I knew bullets were flying around my property. But, I KNOW my backstop. There is no way a bullet is gonna go through it. Period. I am respectful of my neighbors and try to get along with Everyone. I am a Christian. But at the same time I’m not gonna let some unhappy rear end ruin my happiness. And shooting makes me happy. As I said before, if they don’t like shooting then they should move to town. It’s that simple. I respect their right to not like me shooting so they should respect that I like to shoot.

A question? Why would you have 40 acres, have a huge berm and not shoot?

Was thinking about @dennishoddy 's issue with the neighbor who constantly calls the police. Why have the officers after checking her house not started citing her for abuse of the 911 system? After a certain number of times where obviously false calls going through being told that they will check the house but if there are no obvious signs she is going to jail should put a quick stop to that one. That or she will start making holes and when they see no bullet a false police report and abuse charge will let her sit there a little longer. Eventually the point will get across and she will learn a lesson. Best to make sure they take her in on a Friday afternoon so she can enjoy the weekend with some real criminals.

Not to sound arrogant but I'm finally at a point in my life that I can afford what I want and I had always dreamed about owning land. My wife sent me to Mike Seeklander's 5 day course last April for our 31st anniversary because I probably only shoot 2-3 times a year. I came back enthused and had that berm built with the intent to shoot more often. Life and work (I'm kind of a workaholic) interfered and also the thought of my neighbors hearing me crank off 100 rounds wasn't appealing. That was the reason I replied...to make you think of what someone else "possibly" could be concerned about. Rather than spread dandelions all over somebodies yard I would recommend talking to your neighbors and letting them know your backstop, lateral limits and other safety conditions. You have no obligation to do so but at least you will have tried to make the situation better. Who knows it might be a win for you. I was taught growing up that fences make good neighbors. Now I believe communication is just as good as a fence. Granted it might be a waste of your time but gun owners are already made out to be arseholes no sense fueling the fire. Thanks for letting me ramble.
