I've owned 14 AK's and maybe 8 Mini 14's over my lifetime.

I would choose a Mini 14.

While both are similiar in many ways with backwards charging handles, rock in mags, odd/different safety locations, tons of proprietary parts, and difficulty of optic mounting, we are not talking about that.

Here, we are talking about grabing a gun to help a neighbor, NOT talking about future parts availability or other situations, running out of ammo or aftermarket mags, or mag cost.

Mini 14 in my opinion, Less recoil, typically lighter

Win 94 in 30-30 over an AR, Mini 30 over an AK but only because ammo would be easier to find.

30-30 easier than the most popular center fire rifle cartridge in the US ? The 5.56/223 out sells every other center fire rifle cartridge by a wide margin. The only thing more popular in sales is the 22 LR. 30/30 isn't even in the top 15 and hasn't been in decades. No its not my opinion its retail sales data collected yearly and the 223/5.56 is always number one year after year.

I will go so far as to say it's the saving grace for the Mini14 , the chambering is dirt common just like the 30-06 once was in factory offerings from everyone.

I would still choose the 30-30 over the AR, and once you get out in the country everyone but the young whipper snappers has a 30-30. Honestly if it were not for the threat of riots and crap I would not own a semi-auto rifle. Heck I am still tempted to trade my Mini 14 and mags, etc for a lever action 308 at times. Only reason I do not is that I expect the Democrats to try a real power grab sooner or later.
