Any of you guys ever hear of John Prine?

Prine is beyond brilliant. He's in Tulsa soon, but it's a Saturday during the deer rut. Otherwise I'd be there. :D
He's ties Townes VanZandt for my favorite singer/songwriter. Prine's much more versatile though, and his humor is spot on. So many songs that are absolutely perfect. His cohort Steve Goodman is another good one.

I heard Allah and Buddha were singing at the Savior's feast
And up in the sky an Arabian rabbi
Fed Quaker oats to a priest.

Fawesome video, and great choice for an underataed band. I love the buildup of riffage/bass/drums. in that song. Pretty tight band. Simple and loud.

I can't belive I forgot to mention my all time favorite....PRIMUS!!!!

Talk about underrated, Ler can flat out play. Overshadowed by less, but the dude is amazing. Tim The Herbal Drummer and Brain are both sumbitchs' on a drum set too. Les speaks for himself.

PRIMUS will always be the masters because they are all talented enough to do anything, but chose to record ridiculously goofy, long, experimental funk jam band songs. Primus will always suck, and Larry will always be a *******.

+1. OMG. I'm a spoiled progressive metal player today with good expensive gear but as far as an early inspiration- it was these guys, and a girl. You played their **** you got a chance to play simple **** reallyreally loud into ****ed up gear and get away with it. Thurston Moore was like a god to me when I was a little kid,way more than Hendrix or Page. (Except for my main idol,Tony Iommi). One of my first bands ever was in junior high in a band that did covers of their early to mid 80s stuff playing back yard gigs around San Diego in the mid 80's. I had a really ****ed up Mustang,a stolen Silvertone and played into 2 ****ed up Marshall JMP50s into a couple of beatthe****up old 1960 cabs with speakers cones that had to be repaired after every other show. It kind of freaks me out a little now to see them play with the same intensity they had when they were younger even though theyre like, old now. F me. That means I'm an old dude too. Lollllll. Good choice. Many memories.

Yes. My favorite music is completely lacking in effort, and chemically influenced. Jacked up gear not even an obstacle. Age is just a number. Sonic Youth will always hold a special place in my heart. Always. Definitely many memories.

Something to be said for simplicity. Volume, energy and anger are as good as talent if you wield them right. :D
98% of the music I listen to daily is either classic country, or doom/sludge/stoner/grunge/noise rock. Stuff with no political message, no complexity. No costumes, no make up. Dudes in jeans and t-shirts playing as hard as they can. Bonus points if it's about dragons, wizards, bigfoot, aliens, muscle cars or pinball. I'm not really a punk fan, though.

I'd would not mind catching these guys live. The drummer sits on a 5 gallon bucket. I read an interview with Dixie Dave, and they are all drug abusing, alcoholic, dirty white trash, with all due respect. But captivating.

Good choice, love the guitar hiding in that song.

Sonic Youth is underrated? Maybe we run in different circles. I'm a huge fan and so are most people I know.

The Sonics are pretty underrated. Their cover of "Louie Louie" on the album "Boom!" is the first punk song ever, IMO.

I'm also a pretty big fan of Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band. Staying up all night hacking while listening to Trout Mask Replica is something everyone should experience. It's a shame no one's heard of them.

Do not get into a punk-off with me, bucko. Listen to the Dead Boys or the Damned, followed by Iggy and the Stooges, then listen to the Ramones. You're tone-deaf if you think they're even close to being in the same league.

E: The Ramones are an example of how doing drugs, and not knowing how to bathe or play your instruments doesn't make you a punk band. Ditto for the Sex Pistols. Spend less time in Hot Topic.

You must be older than I suspected. Dropping the ol Happy Days "Bucko" term tells me a little more. maybe you are worth your salt in punk.

I listened to more OI! and ska than I did punk.
