I've never owned a gun I did not shoot and I have never had one depreciate in value. I consider them one of the coolest toys...ug..I mean investments as its one of the few that you can play with while you own it and its still worth what you paid for it or more down the road.
Granted, this theory wouldn't work if you only kept them short term.
