Someone posted here a while back that he had gone to the Bass Pro Shop parking lot to buy a gun and got held up. I think it was a gun adverted on Armslist. I don't remember who made the post. I guess something like that would make me a little paranoid.

I remember that. Guy got robbed by a black man wearing an obama shirt.

Whenever I am buying a gun from someone, I ask ahead of time if they have any issues with me running the SN on the gun, when it comes back good I get a quick bill of sale, both of our names, SN, selling price, and signature. I have only been told by 1 person that I could not run the #'s, so obviously I did not buy.

And how exactly do you go about "running the SN on the gun"? The police will not do it unless they have the gun in hand so that they can take it into possesion if it comes back as stolen.

When you sell a firearm to an OSA member, friend, or someone from armslist.com what steps do you take?

1) I prefer to meet at a local range for three reasons. The first being it's not odd seeing someone with a firearm in the parking lot. Second there are a lot of other armed individuals besides myself. Last but not least if the person wants to test the firearm they are more than welcome to on their own dime.

2) I never go unarmed (CC) or alone and I always bring at least two people with me.

3) I ask for an ID to make sure the individual I'm selling the firearm is of age to purchase said firearm (21 for handguns and 18 on all other firearms).

4) I remember the license plate of the vehicle that they drove and keep all info from our contact (cell phone, e-mail, ect)

Are there any other steps you guys think I should implore to make my transactions safer? I'm open to any suggestions and would like to know what others do during their face to face meets?

I think you covered most of it pretty well . . . Sounds like myself to be honest!

Not a bad idea either, I second the question that was asked:

I've heard of pawnshops being able to do this but it doesn't seem very convenient...

This wasn't a gun transaction but my son sold his car which was in both of our names at the time, about a month later I received a letter from the turnpike authority stating I owed them some money plus a fine for not paying some tolls. I told them the car had been sold and it wasn't us. You'll never guess what they asked for to prove our innocence ............. A BILL OF SALE! Luckily we had one so they went away. just saying

This exact same thing happened to me.

I drive a SUV with limo tinted windows so you aren't going to see the two people with me. 9 out of 10 times my wife and a friend are the ones that will accompany me on my face to faces. 9/10 times both stay in the car unless the person i'm selling to also brings a friend then my buddy will usually step out. I usually park behind the person and my wife is the one that will write down the tag #. Any gun I sell in my name I usually record the name of the person I sold it to, their contact info (e-mail and phone number), and the S/N off the gun.

Some might say I'm over cautious but in the past I have sold a firearm to an individual that was used in a murder. Ever since that head ache I would like to try and have as much info as possible especially if the gun is in my name. IMHO there are way to many crazy SOBs out there and you can never be to safe. As far as having two extra people with me you will never see them unless you bring someone along with you.

Wow. You wont be selling many guns to folks on OSA Im afraid. Might as well just meet him at an FFL and let the dealer do a transfer for you, 10 day wait and all, Cali style. :punch:

Just because your not found guilty doesn't mean you might not have to go through a bunch of bs to clear yourself. To me a BOS is simply stating that I'm selling something to another person and we have an agreement on a piece of paper. Not a big deal really. If both people are honest law abiding citizens then it shouldn't create a big fuss.

I think the problem most people have with this is they dont know you or what you are going to do with their personal information. I dont have a problem with you wanting something for your records, but since I have no idea what you are going to do with those records, you can keep my name or address off of it.

Are you being serious? No, I own no NFA items. But everytime I've purchased a firearm new the dealer has checked my driver's license to make sure I am who I say I am and I fill out a 4473 that includes all my personal information. Are you telling me that the S/N is never recorded and tied to my name? If that's the case then I have been misinformed for quite some time.

Its already been said, but in Oklahoma, guns are not registered. Gun registries have been passed by a select few communist states, but federal law does not require it and since Oklahoma pretty much follows federal law when it comes to guns, no gun bought here, except NFA, are registered.

Its funny, reading all these responses not only am I making a mental note of people I probably wont buy from, but it reminds me of how I was when I first moved from California to Arkansas.

After I was there for 4 months or so decided I had some guns to sell. I asked around about it and they all told me to just sell it to anyone, didnt matter. Of course being a CA boy this blew my mind, so I called the states ATF office in Little Rock. After a little chuckle they said yes I could just sell it in the paper or wherever. I asked them if I needed any documentation, and after kinda laughing some more she said no, just I couldnt sell it to a known felon. Sooo I was still kind of cautious, but I went ahead and put the gun on Craigslist (at the time I didnt know that was a no no on Craigslist, soon after I got email from them informing me not to do it again). After about a day I had a buyer. Arranged to meet him in a public place, no biggie. After he decided he wanted it, I took out my receipt book (after all I still wasnt convinced this was legal, I even took down the person at the ATF that I talked to) and proceeded to ask this fellow for his drivers license. He got kinda aggravated and asked why. I told him this was my first gun sale since moving to AR and just wanted to make sure to cover my ass. Still aggravated, he gave me the info. I look back now and laugh at myself, but leaving outside of a communist state still hadnt sunk in yet.

Since then all my transactions are in a public parking lot, most of the time at night since I work late, I show gun buyer shows cash, I count cash while he fondles gun, we shake hands and I leave. Easy as pie. Alot of you are taking things waaaaaayyyyy over board. If you dont exercise the rights that we have been blessed with in Oklahoma, whats the sense in having them? Might as well live in California, the government there will help make sure all your gun transactions are as safe as can be.....:punch:

Have sold 2 firearms in the past. They had money I had firearms. I knew both of them and knew they were not felons. So we just swapped. As far as buying and selling involving OSA members I would not hesitate. I might just want to see a DL just to make sure they are from Oklahoma.

I use the Senate chamber men's room at the Capital for transfers. Best place ever. They prop the side door open with folded paper. Saves going through the detector thingy in front.
