I have been proudly exercising my newly acquired right to open carry, and as such, I am VERY careful to extensively examine the front door, as well as any surrounding areas for signs that suggest that firearms are not allowed.
So, last Tuesday I was at a new store for me... I was picking up some whole wheat pie crusts, and organic items for my mother for thanksgiving. I won't say the name of the establishment, but they sell "whole foods".
I had been there for no less than 20 minutes, trying to find things that were (in my opinion) illogically located, and had interacted with 1 particular worker 4-5 times. I am scooping some oats (not a metaphor) and this is my final item to collect, when this same worker approaches me and informs me that "actually, we do not allow firearms here, even though Oklahoma..." I didn't cut him off, he trailed off. I kindly suggested that I had checked carefully and that there was nothing posted. "Ya, we are working on getting that posted, if you want, I can wait with your stuff, while you run to your car." I told him that this was my last item, and then I was going to check out. He said that that would be fine.
I feel like I handled the situation properly, and after some extensive reading of the law, there is something ambiguous about the "right of property owners"... Thoughts?
I haven't attempted to open carry or look for signs restricting it at Uptown Grocery, but when I had emailed inquiring how they would treat the new law I was given the response that they respect Oklahoma law and have no plans to restrict shoppers of their rights. If you haven't been, Uptown Grocery is similar to Whole Foods, but in my opinion better. It's a little more affordable, there's cheese for days, and it's owned by Buy 4 Less, an Oklahoman company. Not only that, but it's closer to home at Danforth and Kelly.
