Jeeez! you guys are such a bunch babies....I hope the shtf thing never happens....99% of you people are doomed without your GPS, transponders and your designer gear that you have never used because you don't want to get it dirty.
There are two kinds of people on here "Walkers" and "Talkers" and it is very easy to spot which is which.
Most of you "talkers" have never even spent 2 days alone in your own house, Of coarse you would tremble at the thought of spending a couple weeks in the wilderness completly cut off from the outside world.
Us "walkers" just go out there and put our money where our mouth is.
We are a nation of leaders and followers "COME ON GUY'S.... THIS WAY!!"

:goodmorning: Dude, if I were you I would leave myself at the trailhead. I think you need a break.........from yourself. LMAO.

???????well?????????

When I said god's hands It was a metaphore for "fate", I'm not going out there to test "God"..I,m not going out there naked hoping that if God wants me to live, he will send me an angel with a parka.
I just find it very cleansing and spiritual (not in a religious way) to withdraw from society and do some soul searching, and for me the best way to do that is to go into the wilderness during adverse conditions, putting it all on the line, observe, adapt and overcome.
You never feel more alive than when you have faced death and conquered it.
Thats why it it often called a vision quest because you go out there to see who you really are.
I don't have a "death wish" I have a "life wish".
I guess most people can't understand this because they have never done anything that is'nt climate controled.
The wilderness is not something to be feared it is something to be worshiped.. after all we are of the wilderness, I think to many people have forgotten this.

That is my point exactly... I have to get away from the tired, stressed, angry and intolerant person that I have become, I want to go out and reset and get in touch with the person that I really am and want to be.
many people do this in a number of different ways, this just happens to be my way.
Believe me.. I will leave myself at the trailhead and I will come back a new man(which is good because the old one is about worn out).

I enjoy spending time out on the family ranch. There were many times when I was at the end of my rope and would just grab the tent, a fishing pole, 22 pistol, knife, book of matches and just hang out all weekend. I took myself away from everything and it let me clear my head. It was relaxing and peaceful. Also enjoyed taking road trips with no destination. Just point the car in one direction and go. I'll admit, I don't understand putting my life in danger to prove something to myself or to feel alive. I do understand, however wanting to get away to clear your head and pull yourself together. Maybe one day when I reach your age the simple things like a weekend out in the woods or a weekend drive won't do the trick anymore. Maybe doing that stuff all along might prevent me reaching the point you have.

I wish you the best of luck and I hope you find what you're looking for. Here's to finding your answers and a safe return.

On a side note, you should keep a journal so that later on you can look back and remember.

If the SHTF ever happens, most of us will not immediately head for the top of the Rockies.

We all feel the pressure of this modern life and the demands that people around us make. We all want to go off and commune with nature and have time to decompress. If you were going in the summer and ensuring that people knew where to search for you if you didn't check in on time we would probably be very supportive. If you were planning a 3-4 day hike, we probably still would.

But let's face it, you're 47. Your Ranger days are behind you. You have a family to take care of. You're going at a less than optimal time of the year and you don't want anyone to be able to find you. You can't plan for 2 weeks of good weather and you're not taking a pack animal (your dog doesn't count).

All we're doing is suggesting you take a more cautionary approach and consider the potential pitfalls of your hastily planned escape. Everyone occasionally has a devil may care attitude, but most don't immediately take it to the far end of the spectrum.

Most of us have wished you well and truly mean it. Just because we think you're semi-suicidal in this venture doesn't mean we're "Talkers". It means we're concerned for your safety and would prefer you consider a more sane approach to your trek. As a former Marine who spent a LOT of time in the high desert and mountainous/cold weather locations, I'm intimately aware of how quickly conditions can turn hostile. I don't know you personally, but I'd prefer that you not be taking a dirt nap within the next 2-3 weeks. JMO, YMMV
