I saw Ernest Tubb and the Texas Troubadours 3 or 4 times in the 70's - wonderful entertainers! On breaks when the house band played they didn't go to the bus - mingled in the crowd and would share a drink or dance. I still have an autographed picture of my mother with E.T.:wink2:

Current bands - I'm thinking Old Crow Medicine Show or Reckless Kelley.

There have been a couple of GREAT answers here. I have to agree with the Clash and the Kinks. Here are some other honorable mentions:

The Cult, Oingo Boingo, and Warren Zevon

You might consider all these as niche performers, but they are great and underrated nonetheless.

Who in your opinion is the most underrated band? You know the one that put out hits but really never got the respect they should have. My vote goes to Cheap Trick. Lots of hits like "Dream Police" "want you to want me" "Gonna raise hell" and so on. And who can forget their lead guitarist Rick Nielsen. Wild stuff there. Who is your pick?

Don't forget "She's Tight"

I like music, but I'm not an expert by any stretch in other genres -- However, I'm a bit of a connouisseur of country and western, and I have to say, the answer to this question in the C&W world is without a doubt Kevin Fowler.

This guy's music, voice, lyrics are all superb - he's one of my top 3 or 4 all-time C&W performers/artists, and should easily break into almost anyone's top 15-20 list, if you're a fan of true country & western, not pop charading as C&W. Yet he's relegated mostly to the Texas circuit/charts.

For starters, here's one of the best songs ever:

That one was a fullblown mainstream Nashville hit, as well it should have been, but a lot of other ones of his should have been, too.

How's about a little Lord Loves the Drinkin Man:

I put Kevin up there with the likes of some of the legends, or close behind, but not many other people do....

+1 for Cheap Trick being underrated. Those guys are great and the Red Ant label put out some great records after coming together with Cheap Trick.

If I had to say one band though, as the very most undersung... I'd say Kraftwerk. So many forms of modern music would sound unimaginably different without these guys, and it seems 99% of people have never really heard of them.
