my renters insurance only covers $2,500 of fire arms and addition insurance $143 dollars per year for $5,000. Where do you have insurance from and how much is it?

Who are you through? Mine only covers up to $2500 for theft, everything else is under regular contents coverage.

LC, unless you have a special rider, most policies won't cover over X number of dollars on any item like watches, jewels, guns etc. I have State Farm insurance on my house and cars and rental properties and even have a persona umbrella policy. However, they weren't even close to competitive on insuring my guns.

Since you guys have state farm I guess you could call my agent. He definitely knows his trade. I have my macbook, DSLR, guns, and Iphone all on my personal articles policy. Its just a nice side coverage because theirs no deductible. Because if it everything was just covered under my homeowners and I just lost my macbook I'd only be reimbursed $400 after deductible. Now with the personal articles policy I get the whole price of the new item, say my macbook $1400. Plus when you file a claim with the articles policy, your premium won't go up unlike your homeowners/renters policy is likely to.

And there you would be wrong. In the specific case of firearms, the ISO HO-3 policy counts them under the CC (Contents) coverage, except for cases of theft. In case of theft the ISO HO-3 only insures them up to $2500 ($2000 if they're using 04/91 addition to HO-3).

Some carriers will futz with that $2500 number some but they typically shy away from altering the rest of the HO-3.

Another point to consider is that if your super duper carbine w/ Leupold scope and beta mag is stolen.... the scope and beta mag are not a "firearm" and are under regular contents coverage.

This. The Renter's Insurance is an HO-4 so the limits may be a bit different, but the premise should be the same (coverage exists under contents). That said, I am an auto guy so my knowledge on HO and DP is getting a bit thin.

Also worth noting that, in order to save costs on policies in Oklahoma (as we are a terrible place to write homeowner's insurance), many policies are now offered at a lower premium as a "non-standard," meaning they do not follow the typical ISO policy language and are more restrictive in what they cover. There are more restrictions on what is covered on contents (i.e. more documentation needed), and higher deductibles for hail and wind damages on the structure (especially the roof). So it's worth getting out the policy and reading it, and going over any specific questions with your agent (don'e expect them to know everything off the top of their head, so be specific and make them get detailed answers from the claims department if there is any uncertainty).

I got mine through USAA and when I set up the coverage they asked if they were scoped and the amount I want insured for the ones I had scoped. It also asked me to list the amount I want covered and insured me on the amount I gave them.
