Someone has to be pretty bad for me to not tip well. And I have to be able to pin it on them and not the kitchen etc.

Curious, what happens to the tips that are collected at say, chilis when you pick up the food to go? Does it get divided among all the servers? Restaurant keep it?

If you use a card to pay some restaurants use tipping pools where the tips are shared amongst all the staff and some distribute the tip to the employee who earned it after taxes are deducted .

If you want to make sure the server gets your tip , give it to your server or wait staff in cash in person and let the sort out whether or not they want to declare it in their tip book for tax purposes.

Right. ****ty tippers always have excuses. Always have. Always will.

I've known a bunch. They don't ever change. I like going out and having someone wait on me at a nice restaurant. If every waitress quit their job because they had to depend on tips, there wouldn't be any waitresses. Not a world I want to live in.

You do you. I'll continue to tip well, and have waitresses know me as that guy that gave them a $5 or $10 tip on a $15 ticket, and I'll continue to get great service when I go back. I'll also feel comfortable knowing that my food won't get spit in when at restaurants I frequent.

Not all of us can afford over $80 for meal and another $20 for a tip. We don't eat out very often, but when we do, there's 7 of us. That gets expensive real quick. Therefore we don't eat out often. I don't make much money at my job. In fact, most guys here would probably laugh at my salary. So I'm a chitty tipper. It is what it is. I can't pull money out of my ass.

If you can't afford the tip, you can't afford to eat out.

It's pretty weak sauce to treat other poorly because you think you are treated poorly. Not the way I wanna go thru life.

According to the logic you apply to waiters & waitresses, you should get a better job.

I'd bet ya a 12 pack of Bud Light you never waited tables either. I did. Most of the people I know, but not all, that are good tippers waited tables at some point in their lives. It's a pretty crappy way to make a living if you're not working at a really nice place. For some, it's the only opportunity they've got for a multitude of reasons. I don't wanna live in a world without waitstaff. I suspect you wouldn't either.

This thread has me thinking I need to be more deliberate with my tips. I pretty much do 20% for everyone that isn't downright terrible. Maybe I need to adjust to the level of service more. Ie match mediocre service with mediocre tip and excellent with excellent.

I unanimously pass the resolution and will implement poste haste.

Yes, I agree with you. And I need to do the same.

I worked as a dealer in a casino, 20 years ago. Dealers were paid $5/hr + tips.

BUT, all tips were pooled and divided between dealers AND PIT BOSSES.

I had several players that only played at my table. I went on break, they did not play. I moved to a different table, they moved. I received 4 - $100 tips, one day. Total was over $1200. All went to the pool.

One dealer was sullen, total lack of personality. He usually had 0-1 players, unless we were very busy.

I quit, after 3 months. I made decent money, but the policies were unpalatable.

Pooling of tips is a guaranteed NO TIP, by me. The entire premise of tips is personal reward for excellence.

I knew a guy that was a dealer in Vegas. He said nothing burned his ass more than having to split tips with dealers that were complete assholes to the players and guests.

He said if he would have been the one distributing the cash they would have got a right hook to the chin before they got the money. I’m pretty sure he was serious.
