Some good advice here... The Boy went snowboarding last year, so he is familiar with it. I am WAY out of shape, so that worries me that I am going to be miserable after an hour or two, no matter what. That sucks. So int at respect, maybe the short runs in VT would be good. I DEFINITELY don't want to be on a mountain it is going to take me several hours to get down. I can pretty well guarantee that would be the end of it for me. I'd get pissed and tired and not want to go back up the mountain again.

Monarch is beginner friendly, offer lessons all day long and even if crowded it's pretty efficient. If your son is like my son and daughter he'll pick up on it quickly. They did lessons the first morning, spent the first afternoon on the easy stuff and by midday the second day they were on the blacks.

Start having the family doing crunches and core training now.

I have a bad back and was finished after the first day. I did very well in training class but by the time we got on the mountain I was worn out. I'd recommend skiing instead of snowboarding for the grown ups.

Here, but occasionally There.
No advice from me with either sking tips or places to go.

I figured out the logistics once (and a wee bit of the physics of the sport) and decided I couldn't think of any reason WHATSOEVER for deliberately throwing myself down a mountain.

I'm kinda with you, Terry. I am not that into the idea - The Boy is gung ho, The Wife REALLY wants to try skiing at least once. <sigh> So that means I get to try it at least once. <sigh>

I'm doing some research on Colorado and NM and I am leaning more and more toward Vermont. I mean, the prices aren't any cheaper, everything looks like a cookie-cutter condo rental, driving is a minimum of 10-13 hours (so two days bookending), etc. I don't think these would save us as much, and probably wouldn't feel as quaint as flying to Boston and driving out into Vermont, staying in a cabin in the hills, etc. We're purposely avoiding the condo rentals in Killington. Plus, trying to narrow down the million choices just of places to choose from in NM/CO, THEN trying to pick just the right place to stay, knowing nothing about it all... it's like information overload, and it seems from what I'm seeing online to be pretty commercialized, for sure.

Nederland was the most absolutely chillest, low-key place I've been across NM and CO. I'm a TERRIBLE skier, but had a great time there.

Man, we loved Nederland. Close to home, easy in and out, slopes were never jammed with people, lots of easy routes down the mountain, cheap lift tickets, quick rentals. It was the bomb. Now, twent-five years later, lodging anywhere close is too expensive. Looking to book in March, the only thing left at this point is crappy rentals and ridiculously expensive rentals. We decided on Winter Park. Snowmobiles had better be like dirt bikes lol

I just stayed with locals I knew, so lodging was never an issue. But I get it. Stuff around Boulder is $$$$
