Well, we did get two different stories from him ... first she didn't understand and then when I pressed him she fully understood and supported him. 
After that I just let it go ... Can't help those who don't want to help themselves ... selfish people never see themselves that way ...
ETA: I learned when I was very, very young you don't f*** with Mother Nature ... being all self-sufficient and confident and "enlightened" is one thing. But I can get all those things without risking my life to prove to others I have them. However, as always, YMMV.
What a weak society we have become. This guy wants to take a break and go on a hike and people here freak out about it. Elemer Keturi and his partner used to travel to Alaska each spring and hike for 17 days to reach their jobs at a gold mine outside of Flat, Alaska. No cell phone, no gps and no flashing strobe lights. Weak is what we are in this country.
