What's it matter if someone places their hand over their heart during the national anthem (or especially, the pledge of allegiance)?

Or should people be required to worship "National Symbols"?
As a retired military veteran, the symbolism is very important to me. We do "worship" the American Flag, or at least most of us do, as well as the Bald eagle. The placing of the hand over the heart and the removal of headgear are signs of respect not of "worship".

That's a little bit more extreme than I'm willing to go. Gov't is not supposed to pick a "winner" in religion. Not allow laws to show a bias or preference. It is supposed to respect religion and allow it to be practiced freely. Gov't sometimes has to act as a referee between two religions if they try to use their religion as an excuse to attack or restrict the other. Otherwise gov't should stay on the sidelines.

Gregg

i agree but when the government becomes saturated with religious idealists we get "anti sharia" type legislation. Better to keep religion out of politics.

I don't think we said any different... just sayin'...

Religion in government has been the source of MANY conflicts throughout history.

Some believe those actions to be signs of submission to whatever government is behind the flag. They aren't being disrespectful.

We didnt always put our hand over our heart during the "pledge of allegience". I think the boy scouts and germany had something to do changing that. Besides the pledge gets changed every now and then.

Unfortunately, disrespecting the flag is free speech, which trumps symbolism.

As for the eagle, it could be any bird, in fact we almost respected/worshipped a turkey.

What jerks my tears and chain is dissing during the Nat'l anthem. I usually invoke my free speech rights as soon as its finished, with my own opinions of the dissers.

It was the flat-palmed salute. And relatively speaking, the pledge isn't even that old. It was written by a Socialist around the turn of the century and published in a youth-centered magazine run by Socialists.
